Long Weekend

Brother and Joy came up to visit this past weekend and I took Friday off to enjoy the time with them.  They arrived on Thursday afternoon and I got off work in time to drive back to SF, pick up their luggage, drive home, and walk to Hog Island for HH with them.

On the walk home, there was a really pretty sunset and the sky was pink and orange.  The weather was really pleasant and it remained warm through the night…so unusual.

On Friday, we got up early and went for a short run to Chinatown.  We stopped for breakfast at Washington Bakery and had some porridge and fried dough.  Yum.

Later that day, we drove to Sausalito to check out a cute novelty shop and grabbed a quick bit to eat before heading over to the Walt Disney Family Museum.

The last stop was Humphrey Slocombe.  I was bummed that I couldn’t get a scoop of Secret Breakfast but I got to try Fluffernutter, whcih really tasted like an Abbazabba!

On Saturday, I had hula rehearsal in the morning so Brother and Joy wandered Japan Town and had brunch on Fillmore.  Afterward, we headed home and walked to lunch with Jes and Koa.  It was so warm and sunny outside. Later that night, we drove down to Redwood City for lobster rolls and clam chowder at Old Port Lobster Shack before driving down to Shoreline for the Journey concert.

It was super crowded on the lawn but we somehow found Dot and the Masayas and hung out at the top where there was an extra bar and plenty of room to spread out.  We stayed until the end and watched them perform their most famous songs.

It was a fun long weekend with Brother and Joy.  I guess it’ll hold me over until Christmas.

Here are the photos from this weekend.

Late Lunch

We had a really beautiful Saturday afternoon and I was able to get a little Vitamin D today.  Jes and I walked down to Ferry Plaza in search of a tasty lunch.  This is the rocket that has been on display on The Embarcadero.  Jack calls it “Uncle Jesse’s Rocket”.

After striking out on the Porchetta sammich (sold out), we waited in line for a table at Hog Island Oyster Co.  We ended up having quite an afternoon feast and it was fantastic.  We started with some Sweetwater oysters with their classic “Hog Wash”

Then we had a roasted Dungeness Crab that looked like a massacre after we were done.  I made a fat mess on the table and my hands were covered in crab juice and butter.  Tasty.

For the last course, we shared my favorite clam chowder in the whole-wide world.  It was so yummy.

After this seafood feast and two drinks each, we were stuffed and oh so happy.

Towards the end of lunch, Joy arrived at the Ferry Plaza with her girlfriends in time to say “hi” before moving on her way to Fisherman’s Wharf.  What a pleasant surprise!

Bivalves Rock

Only recently did I learn how to eat bivalves (a.k.a. clams, oysters, and mussels). I went to Hog Island with some friends a couple years ago and have loved raw oysters ever since. Jes and I go out to eat every Wednesday night and we decided to try their small oyster bar/restaurant at The Ferry Building tonight. It was so much fun and the food was very yummy. I still can’t believe that I can eat bivalves. I feel ALL growns-up!

shuck, suck, and…chuck

On Sunday, we drove to Hog Island Oyster Co. located in Marshall, CA. The drive was long and almost nauseating but well worth it. Vyl and Bang reserved a picnic table and bbq and we all brought fixins for the oysters along with kalbi, watermelon, and plenty of wine/champagne. When you get there you buy raw oysters from guys at the counter and they give you a rubber glove and knife. It’s literally a day of shucking and sucking. I shucked a couple oysters myself and luckily didn’t lose a finger in the process. Raw oysters are actually pretty good. Vyl made a couple good sauces to top the oysters but I think my favorite was the basic cocktail sauce/lemon juice combination. I also enjoyed a bit of kalbi, rice, and kimchee to compliment the rawness.

It was a very pleasant setting with lots of good friends who drove over from the East Bay and SF. Susie and Victor even made it after Susie finished the SF Half Marathon that same morning. Unfortunately, I got a little too much sun and my shoulders burned a bit. On top of that, all the driving on the winding roads, dehydration, and the airplane ride kinda caught up with my by the end of the plane trip home. I kept my composure on the parking shuttle and then let it all go in the trashcan in the parking lot. Once more at home, a quick shower, and a nap made it all better by 10 pm. Ah…it was a good trip. Oh yeah, thanks for the ride to the airport, J!
