Oahu 2016

IMG_8495

Ah…Hawaii…this year’s trip was just days after Thanksgiving. The flight went as well as it could with a squirmy 15-month-old without his own seat.

IMG_8504

He took two naps and played in the aisle after the meal service was over.

IMG_8534

We hung out with Yoon and the family a lot more this time around. On our first night, they met up with us for dinner so we could borrow their pack-n-play and other essentials.

IMG_8559

I just love staying at the Sheraton Waikiki. It makes those early-morning wake-up calls from the kids so much more bearable. Just look at that sunrise!!!

IMG_8585

The Tsaos were on the same exact trip this time around – including same flights and same hotel. The girls had such a great time together.

IMG_8664

This little guy had the time of his life too. He love the pool, the sand, and even the ocean!

IMG_8921

IMG_8889

These two are my favorites from the trip. The top one will definitely be Christmas-card worthy. The bottom one is gonna get blown up and put up on the wall at home.

IMG_8734

On one of the days, we visited Aulani and the lagoon/beach that is open to the public.

IMG_8759

We found the Stitch statue and the kids had fun wandering the grounds.

IMG_8757

For lunch, we ate at the resort and Janie’s kid’s meal came with an ice cream sundae with Mickey Mouse sprinkles!!

DCIM100GOPRO

We spent a lot of time at our own pool and caught some really sunny days along with a few passing rain clouds too.

DCIM100GOPRO

During this trip, KK conquered her fear of putting her face underwater. By the end of the trip, she was floating around with her ears submerged and playing in the shallow pool without her floaties.

IMG_8777

Speaking of poolside, it was nice to have an old friend to hang out with while the kids napped. We had our fair share of mai tais and other rummy drinks.

IMG_9203

IMG_9252

This one was a diy drink compliments of Ranee. It was our last day at the pool and SOMEONE had to help her finish off the rum they had bought at the store.

IMG_8967

Here’s another one of my Mai Tai photos along the way. It included a watermelon-grubbin’ cherub in the background.

IMG_9187We discovered a new pork joint next to Leonard’s. It’s called Kono’s. Their original one is on North Shore and they recently opened one in Waikiki. Jes said it was the best pork sandwich he’s had in a long time.

IMG_9005

The kids ate well on this trip too. Peanut and I went to Marukame Udon three mornings that week to pick up breakfast.

IMG_9087

KK LOVED the Spam musubi and finally started eating the whole thing. In past trips, she would eat the Spam and hand back the rice and seaweed. This time, she would wake up and ask “can I have sushi for breakfast?”

IMG_9260

The girls also had plenty of Baskin-Robbins this week. There’s a store in the hotel and it was the perfect treat for new accomplishments at the pool and in the ocean.

IMG_9659

On our last night in Hawaii, we went on a trolley ride through downtown to see the City Lights.

IMG_9275

It was a fun ride through town with Christmas music blasting along the way.

IMG_8968

I also bought these outfits for the kids at the ABC Store. I couldn’t resist.

IMG_9340

We had another fun vacation at our Hawaii House and it’s always sad to say “see you later”.

IMG_9358

As usual, we said “aloha” to Yoon and Kurt on our way to the airport. We did our drive-by at their office to drop off their stuff and give one last hug.

DCIM100GOPRO

I’m so happy that we were able to continue our annual trip to Hawaii and we made some more memories as a family. This is what keeps me going to work every day.

IMG_9371

P.S. Hawaiian Airlines has a new line of cocktails and this one is pretty dope.

P.S.S. Peanut got compliments on our flight home. WIN!!

So much to eat…

IMG_4403One the best things about Hawaii is the food!! In between trips to the pool and beach, we ate and ate.

IMG_4100Of course, we started the trip with Jes’ favorite ramen.  Interestingly, Kurt and Yoon suggested their favorite ramen place and Jes HAD to try it.

IMG_0215He had the tonkatsu ramen at Yotekko-Ya and he agreed. It was delicious.  He thinks it ranks at least #1 or #2 on his list now but he’s debating because their fried rice and gyoza are no good.

IMG_3979Our first meal in Hawaii was actually at Nico’s Fish Market.  It’s close to the freeway and on the way to Waikiki.  I love their furikake ahi and Jes substituted the salad for a mac salad for me. Yes!

IMG_4124One of my favorite breakfasts is the coconut waffle at Eggs ‘n Things.  I don’t know how many times I’ve had it or taken a photo of it but I just can’t help myself.  It’s like I just want to remember the yumminess forever.

IMG_4192For an early dinner, we went to Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin and I had the katsu-don, which also keeps really well for the next morning.  KK never stays awake for dinner here so she always gets this dish for breakfast the next day.

IMG_4276From Rainbow Drive-In, I had the loco moco.  KK loved it so much that she ate half of my plate.  I don’t blame her because it’s so tasty and comforting.

IMG_4302On this trip, I had a whole ‘lotta poke.  I guess i was making up for the last trip when I was pregnant.  One afternoon, we bought some poke and had a picnic in our hotel room.  KK ate her fair share of poke today.

IMG_4321

Since Leonard’s was down the street from Rainbow, we stopped to get 6 original sugar malasadas and then 6 filled malasadas: lilikoi, haupia, and chocolate.  IMG_4317We had plenty to share and the first one I ate was the haupia-filled one and split it with Ranee.  DE-lish!  Even Avia looked excited.

IMG_4374We always have at least one breakfast at McDonald’s.  Their Spam and eggs platter is always tasty – especially when you can have a fried haupia pie after. 🙂

IMG_4408On one of the days, we took Jason and Jia to North Shore for garlic shrimp.  I ate this whole plate all by myself. Don’t judge! KK actually gobbled up half of Jes’ plate after her peeled them all.  That’s my girl!

IMG_4424We also stopped at Matsumoto for some shave ice. We picked coconut, lilikoi, and pineapple today.IMG_4456We also made an impromptu stop at the Dole Plantation on our way back and KK scored a second treat that afternoon.  She loves Dole Whip as much as Mama.

IMG_4602At Yoon’s house, she served brunch including macnut pancakes and fried rice from Boots and Kimo’s.  YUM!IMG_4603She also picked up poke from The Hibachi.  Their hamachi poke was so good.

IMG_4552Back at Sheraton Waikiki, we had a few meals at their poolside bar.  As SPG members, kids eat free with a paid adult meal.  The kalua pork nachos and korean chicken wings were pretty good.  IMG_4687I also had the kimchee fried rice loco moco one afternoon and scored a free crudites platter for KK.

IMG_4695Of course, my favorite part of Hawaii is the refreshing mai tai.  I had quite a few and they taste even better when both of your kids are sleeping.

IMG_4288Also, as SPG members, we got to visit the GIFT store where you can take home whatever you can fit into their tiny paper bag.  Ranee and I raided the store and managed to stuff two full bottles of wine and a cooler bag into it.

IMG_4709I even balanced a little pretzel/peanut butter snack on top for good measure.  Haha.  We’re so ghetto but we followed the rules fair and square!

I love Hawaii.  I can’t wait to go back.

Oahu in December

DCIM100GOPRO

We were so lucky to be able to fly to Hawaii for a second time this year!! We went from December 7-14.  It was to celebrate the arrival of our baby boy and to finish off my maternity leave.  We did this with KK when she was born and I’m so glad we did it again.

IMG_3959The trip was kicked off with an empty plane and extra seat for Peanut.  Awesome.  Everyone did great.

IMG_4095We stayed at Sheraton Waikiki again and it was great.  What was even better was that Ranee and her family also booked the same days and hotel!!

IMG_4348THEN a few days before our trip, Jason and Jia decided to come along too!  What fun!

IMG_4756It was so nice to have someone to have Happy Hour with and extra grown-ups to keep an eyes on the little ones in the pool.

IMG_4593 No trip to Oahu would be complete without seeing our favorite Yoon.  She just bought a house in Kailua and she invited us over for lunch.Trevor is much bigger than he was when we first met him in March and he’s adorable.

IMG_4605He also took a special interest in Peanut.  So cute!

IMG_4220 As usual, I was up really early every morning with Peanut and KK was up pretty early too.  Luckily, there’s a beautiful sunrise to watch every morning and it was nice to just hang out by the infinity pool while it’s empty and quiet. IMG_4636We also met up with Ranee and Avia who were also up early and there was one morning that we walked to Marukame Udon to pick up some breakfast.  Yum…wish I could have udon every morning for breakfast.

IMG_4338One of the best things about this trip was that KK got to spend some fun beach and pool time with Sophie! They had a blast together and it was so sweet to see them having conversations and trying to share.

IMG_4149This trip was Peanut’s first trip and he experienced so many new things.  He loved chilling in the pool, which also helped nap during the day too. He was learning how to sit up and it was perfect for hanging out on the beach.  I love this photo.

IMG_4631One great thing about being in Hawaii in December is that they take Christmas very seriously there.  The decorations are off the hook everywhere you go.  This is the tree in the lobby of the Moana.

DCIM100GOPRO

We spent A LOT of time at the pool this trip and KK conquered some of her fears.  She was “swimming” around with her floatie on and went down the small slide all on her own.  She was still afraid of jumping in and was too scared to go down the big slide.  Regardless, we are so proud of how much she accomplished.

IMG_4774We had such a fun and memorable trip! I can’t wait to go again sooner than later.  Food post will follow.

Oahu: Day 6

Day Six: 3/10/15

IMG_3405On our last day in Hawaii, we really tried to take advantage of having an afternoon flight home.  During breakfast, Yoon stopped by to drop off some cookies.

IMG_3409Then before we finished packing, we took KK out to the beach one last time where she really made the most of it.  IMG_3413

I love this time of day (~9am) on Waikiki Beach because it’s warm and super empty.IMG_3432 IMG_3515This kid loved splashing around in the water and was such a joy to watch.

IMG_3483After washing up and getting our bags packed, we all met up at the bar for a last drink.IMG_3504 IMG_2605We got a family photo and no one had their eyes closed!!  Amazing.IMG_2579We all said our early goodbyes before hopping in the cars to get to the airport.IMG_2585I knew it would be a little rushed once we got to the airport so this was nice.

IMG_3531

Here’s one last view of the island as we took off.  IMG_3533The flight was super short (3.5 hours) but really bumpy in the end.  KK did great the whole trip but then nearly lost it once we landed.  We were so far back in the plane and wanted to just get in the stroller to go to sleep.  That was the probably the worst 15 minutes of our entire trip.

Can’t wait for our next trip.  I think I should start planning it now so I have something to look forward to.

Oahu: Day 5

Day Five: 3/9/15

DSC_6150On Monday morning, we had brunch at the Moana Surfrider.  It was like a mini celebration of Johnny and Joy’s Anniversary that was on Friday.  This is where they got married and had their morning reception.

DSC_6151

DSC_6162

I also took a photo of them in front of the Mahalo sign with the addition of Alice.  They took a wedding photo with this sign 6 years ago.DSC_6171My mom and I enjoyed the rocking chairs for a bit.  I love this hotel.  It’s too bad we’ve outgrown it.  Jes and I will have to return later when the kids are older and don’t have to come to Hawaii with us.  🙂

IMG_3304After brunch, we went to the aquarium.  KK always takes a picture in front of this sign and we added Alice to it this time.IMG_3344IMG_2484In the afternoon, we went back to the pool and got a cabana for the family.  We convince my mom to get in the pool and got a photo of the grandparents with their grandkids.  So sweet.

IMG_3357This kid started out really scared of the kiddie pool but by the end of the day, she didn’t want to leave.  The lips were practically blue by the time we convinced her to come out.  This always happens by the last day of our trip.

IMG_3351For lunch, Brother and I drove to Rainbow to pick up some food for everyone.  I couldn’t resist getting the fruit punch there.  Don’t care how artificial it is…it’s just so good.

IMG_3374

After the pool, we hung out in the hotel room to rest.  I had a pounding headache and KK had missed her nap.  We skipped dinner at Side Street Inn and KK fell asleep super early and was down for the rest of the night.IMG_3382

Once I was feeling better, the family had made it to Side Street Inn and brought back kimchee fried rice for us.  In the meantime, Jes and I pushed KK in the stroller down to the bar to enjoy the last sunset of the trip.IMG_3387

I had a virgin pina colada, which was much more satisfying than the lava flow I had the day before.IMG_3388

We also ordered poke.  I cheated and had a few cubes.  It was SO good.  Man, I really miss this stuff.IMG_3397Here is our dinner.  Kimchee fried rice and Hawaiian Sun.  Perfect.  Thanks for picking up dinner for us, Brother.

Oahu: Day 4

Day Four: 3/8/15

IMG_3157Our 4th day in Hawaii started out with a walk down to Eggs ‘n Things for my favorite coconut waffle.   IMG_3190 IMG_3173 IMG_3180We managed to get a table for the whole family and we were all stuffed when we were all done.

IMG_3196 IMG_3191After a failed attempt at taking the kids to the zoo (they both fell asleep), we ended up at the Moana beach bar where I got a virgin lava flow that had banana flavor in it.  Yuk.  The real kind doesn’t usually have it but mine did.

IMG_3201For lunch, we went to Marukame Udon and I got the udon with a soft egg on top with a few sides to take back to the hotel.

IMG_3251After lunch, we all went to the beach and it was warm enough to go for a little dip in the ocean.

https://youtu.be/LgQo-X772G0

I took the GoPro out there and caught Jes floating – his favorite thing to do in the ocean.
IMG_3295This was Jes’ attempt at dunking me.  Luckily the water was super shallow all the way out there and I managed to escape.IMG_3214Of course there was time in the sand and Brother dug a moat for KK.  Too bad the tide was coming in fast and flooded every time they were making progress.

IMG_2403Before heading back to the hotel room, we took the kids to the pool and they hung out in the shallow area together.

IMG_3232After a little break in the hotel room, we went downstairs to watch the Honolulu Festival Parade.   IMG_3241This was our favorite performance – it was about 230 Japanese students all dancing their hearts out with high energy and big smiles.  They looked exhausted but also looked like they were having the time of their lives.IMG_3269 The night was finished off with a really good fireworks show over Waikiki Beach.  We got a really nice view from our hotel pool area.
