Sprouty Update: Day 86

Sprouty_86a

Sprouty is still alive 86 days later.  Woohoo!

As a matter of fact, he’s doing so well that I’m seeing some actual basil leaves growing!  However, I must admit that there was a scary moment when I returned from our week in Hawaii.  The leaves were limp and dried out and he looked super thirsty.  But luckily I got back just in time to give it a little water and it came back to life!  Good job, Sprouty!  Hopefully I will have some tasty basil leaves for a caprese salad by summer.  Mmmmm…

10 miles, baby!

I wasn’t exactly feelin’ it this morning but I managed to get my butt out the door for a 10-mile Long Run.  I ran straight down towards the GG Bridge and ran back.  I was tempted to run all the way to the Sports Basement where they were having a post-race expo but it looked like it was about 1/2 mile ahead and that would make my run back that much farther.  So, I turned around and got home in time for some brunch. Yay me!

An Afternoon at the Playground

This afternoon, I was walking Koa and found Little J and his Mommy at the playground.  I was amazed at how big he’s gotten and enjoyed watching him play in the sand and on the boat.

Hi Five!!

12 days

We are well within Week 2 of our “Veggie Experiment“.  I haven’t tasted fish, pork, chicken, or beef for the past 12 days and it’s been ok so far.  I guess I can think of only two big bummers so far:

  1. We attempted to go out to eat on our usual Wednesday last week and it was quite a learning experience.  We chose a place we go to regularly just to see how we could make this experiment work.  Unfortunately they were serving a special “BBQ Menu” that night.  Dude!!!  It’s bad enough that I had to go veggie but I couldn’t try any of their special BBQ items!  Jes explained to the waiter that we were trying to go veggie so he brought us the bar menu and we luckily found a few items to try.  But we didn’t get to have any brisket!!!  Bummer.
  2. Today I was feeding one of my patients who is an extremely picky eater and  I managed to coax him into eating some of his omelet and pancake.  He also had 2 strips of bacon sitting there on his plate, which he COMPLETELY REFUSED.  It was killing me!!  It smelled so good and this little kid was refusing the “magical animal”!!!!!  I wanted to just gobble it up for him and pretend it never happened but I reluctantly tossed in the trash.  Double-bummer.

So, last Friday we added egg to our “OK foods” and this Friday was supposed to be when we add fish again.  However, after figuring out that my brother’s wedding reception was coming up in 2 weeks, we decided to keep going without fish for an additional week.  So, by the time the reception rolls around, we will be back to our regular carnivorous diet just in time for the tasty Thai feast.  I can’t wait!

Wintery Spring

northstar_01

Friday was the first day of Spring and headed up the mountain to Tahoe for one last hurrah.  On Saturday morning, we drove to Northstar and found lots of dirt, no snow on the road, and sunny skies.  In the parking lot, we contemplated turning around and going back to the cabin but luckily we stuck with the original plan.  We bought half-day tickets, had lunch at the bar, and headed up the mountain at noon.  The trees were all green and there were dirt patches everywhere but by 1 pm, it started to snow snow snow!  Woohoo!

There was just enough slush from the morning and new powder on the ground to make it an awesome afternoon on the slopes. That’s Victor and Susie riding the wide-open runs.

On Saturday night and Sunday morning, it dumped about 1-2 feet of snow.  Check out the photo I took on Saturday afternoon and then on Sunday morning.  Wow!!!  Koa also got to play in the snow and seemed almost confused by all the white stuff.

snowy trees

Our drive home was a little nerve-racking but we managed to get past chain control without having to put chains on and without an accident.  This is what it looked like from the road.  All this was green only 12 hours ago!

The cabin we rented in Tahoe City was pretty awesome.  For $150/night, we got a 3-bedroom, 2-bath, two-story house with all the modern conveniences and SO MUCH SPACE!  I’m tempted to book the house again for a summer trip.

I thought my snow season was over but this weekend proved me wrong.  I wonder how much flights are to Utah right now…

I miss Maui.

snorkeling

It’s been almost a whole week since we left the island and all I have are my photos to keep me going. I miss the sunshine, beautiful water, tasty eats, and time to do absolutely nothing. Here are the photos that I’ll be staring at for the next few months until my next vacation.

And by the way, I still don’t have a phone.
