Is that rain??

We’re a day away from the autumnal equinox and guess what? It’s raining! Sweet. Does that mean it’ll snow soon? Hm…doubtful. It’s rather balmy outside. However, the rain did bring with it a cool lightning show last night and a good washing of the streets.

Last night, Jes’ parents dropped off their dog, Zooey. He’s a German Shepherd/Malamute mix and is quite the “chicken dog”. Perhaps it was early trauma of being picked on by another more aggressive dog. Maybe it’s because he’s been living alone in a backyard all his life with very little socialization with other dogs. All I know is that he’s here with Koa, who wants to play with him really bad. Zooey doesn’t know how to handle all the attention and ends up growling or running away with his tail between his hindlegs. It’s sad really. The funny part is that I think Jes is secretly hoping that Koa will get a good beating from him. Hm…I don’t think that will happen. He’s 4 times the size of Koa but I think he’d be better off as a turtle with a shell to hide in. Well, he’ll be with us for 8 whole days so we’ll see if he grows some courage. Poor Zooey.

yongisdad

Oh man, another one of my friends has produced an offspring. This time it’s the one and only Yong Kim with his lovely wife Helen. Her name is Cara Kim and was born on September 17th. Here’s what Yong had to say: “By the way, everyone who has seen Cara thinks she looks exactly like me. MS. Korea, here come Cara.”
To Yong: Please don’t drop her.
To Helen: Good luck raising both Cara and Yong.
To Both of You: Congratulations!!

yes!

My birthday came early this year cuz I’ve got my toy! Jesse bought me the D70s today and I got to play around with it this afternoon. I snapped around the house, snapped the dog (more than just a few times), took it to the dog park for some action shots, and played with the settings. The shutter speed is awesome, it feels solid, and the wide angle gives my digital photos a new look. I can’t wait to take it to Thailand!

Mutual Understanding

IMG_1421We just got back from Jesse’s cousin’s wedding reception. The reception was pretty standard but Jes had an interesting experience with his grandmother. Grandma (usually referred to as “PoPo”) is a very sweet lady who lives in a studio at the Assisted Living Residence next to Cerritos College. She took care of Jesse when he was a baby so they’ve always had a special bond that required no verbal communication. Exchanges between them usually involve her asking or saying something and Jesse responding with a nod and smile (having no idea what she just said). He’s always had someone to translate in a time of need. Well, today was a little different. We were on our own.

Since we didn’t attend the wedding ceremony, we had the duty of picking her up and taking her to the reception. When we got there, she was pleasantly surprised to see us. As we walked in, she quickly tidied up a bit and started to make some tea for us. So I quietly asked Jes, “uh, does she know we’re taking her somewhere?” It turns out that no one told her ahead of time. OK…I guess we’ll just have to tell her. The problem was that she only speaks Cantonese and neither of us were able to communicate with her. So Jes called his dad and gave the phone to her. Once she was told that we were taking her out for dinner, it was all good. That is, until we suggested that she should bring a sweater. I tried to find one but all she had hanging were a bunch of heavy coats. After some fumbling with broken English and some gestures, she figured it out and spent the next 10 minutes trying to find a sweater in her closet. OK…got the sweater…now we gotta check her shoes. Jes’ mom specifically asked us to make sure she wore proper shoes. So I pulled out a pair of “church shoes” for her. She figured it out and put on one of the them and then decided that the ones she was wearing were fine. OK…those shoes weren’t bad. Time to go!

At the reception, we all sat together at Table 14. Grandma was chillin’…sorta dozing off every now and then. In her old age, I don’t think she remembers many people anymore. At one point, a lady (someone she used to know) came by and tapped her on the shoulder and said “hello” to her. As the lady walked away, Grandma looked at Jes and (in Cantonese) asked him, “do you know who that was?”. Jes shrugged with “I don’t know”. Considering the limited amount of communication they had, they managed to get a good laugh. In fact, Grandma laughed so hard that she had tears in her eyes. That was entertaining…for both of them.

halfway there

Yesterday, I hit 180 downloads and $50 on my istockphoto portfolio (check out the link on the right). I only need 50 more dollars in order to cash out! Most of my photos can only make a max of 40 cents per download due to the limits of my previous 4mpx camera. I now have a 5mpx camera that will yield 60 cents per download for the “Large” file. If only I had a 6mpx digital SLR…*wink* *wink*. It IS someone’s birthday soon. *wink* Anyone want to donate to the “Nikon D70s Fund”? I accept cash, checks, and PayPal. Tee Hee.
P.S. **Happy Birthday to Elaine, Jay, and Juliet!!**

It’s YOUR birthday too?!

I was looking through my old versions of beakatude along with my old geocities site and the pita site. My have things changed. I also ran across some old blogs that I wrote back when nothing was automated. Since I put so much work into them before I thought I’d archive them into Blogger. It starts all the way back in August of 2004. I can’t believe it’s been over a year.
In other news, birthday plans are getting a bit complicated. If you’re free on Saturday, September 24th, plan on meeting us somewhere in LA or Long Beach for some happy birthday fun. Apparently there will be multiple birthday boys and girls celebrating. I’ll keep you posted.
