Missing the Rockstar and a Tob

On Sunday evening, two thirds of Roebling got together for an extra special Sunday Supper.  G and Dena traveled across the country to spend Thanksgiving on the west coast and they brought their little guy Andersen.

He’s only 6 weeks older than Jack so it was really fun to watch the two of them play side-by-side.

Ryan prepared a standing rib roast with yorkshire pudding and we brought over mashed potatoes and creamed corn.  In fact, I made Lawry’s creamed corn from a recipe I found on the interwebs!!  Yum yum!

We all sat around the table eating off of the Sokol-Juns’ bone china wishing that Joel and Tob were also there.  It was so nice to catch up with old friends over good food.  It definitely a pleasant way to end my Thanksgiving weekend.

Here are the rest of the photos.

Holiday Eats

To officially kick off the holiday season, I decided to bake instead of shop.  So, on Black Friday, I made coffee cake and banana nut muffins. Tasty.

This was also the perfect way to show off one of the new monkey plates that I got for my birthday from Michelle.  Aren’t the monkeys cute?!

In the afteroon, I went to the bakery and bought a huge loaf of crusty French bread.  They sliced it for me and it was perfect for turkey berry sammiches!  One of the best things about Thanksgiving is all the leftovers.  I added sliced turkey breast, stuffing, and my homemade cranberry relish.

Chefstruck

Some people get giddy around movie stars but I get all distracted when I see a famous chef wandering around his restaurant.  We had dinner with Yoon (in town for the weekend) at Incanto, which is where Chef Cosentino cooks.  He’s the dude who competed on Iron Chef and known for his ability to turn tuna hearts and calf kidneys into a 5-star dish.  Well, we weren’t very adventurous last night but the food was still very tasty.  Midway through the dinner I noticed the chef wandering around the dining room and hanging out at the bar and couldn’t help staring.

That same evening as I was waiting for my Muni train, I could have sworn that Jamie, of this season’s Top Chef NY, was standing right next to me waiting for her train too.  Just a few months ago I was having drinks at Orson and saw Chef Faulkner (another Iron Chef competitor) wandering around her restaurant. Living in SF is so much fun for a little foodie like me!

Disappointment and Surprise

On Saturday morning, Jes and I took Koa to Chrissy Field for a Shiba Meet-up.  We were supposed to meet a bunch of other Shiba owners and their dogs for a day of romping on the beach but we got there a little late and totally missed them.  We walked and walked and couldn’t find them.  So, Koa ended up with a really long walk and about 20 minutes of running off-leash on the grassy field and beach.  The morning didn’t go quite as planned.  Too bad, Dog.

On Saturday evening, Jes and I went out for a nice dinner at Luce.  It’s a relatively new restaurant that we found on Open Table and thought we’d give it a try.  Have completely no expectations, we were pleasantly surprised with the awesome 5-course tasting dinner that we had.  Apparently when you order the 5-course menu, you end up with 11 actual items to try.  We had an amuse-bouche, all 5 courses, and a sprinkling of intermezzos, palate cleansers, and even a pre-dessert.  What the heck?!  It ended up being a 3-hour dinner and we left satisfied and buzzed.

One of my favorites was the foie gras on top of toasted brioche drizzled with a duck consumme.  Yum.

Another was the pre-dessert consisting of melon granita, ricotta cream (tasted like coconut milk), and basil oil.  Sounds gross but it was sooooo tasty.  I seriously felt like I was a judge on Top Chef with surprise after surprise.  One of the funniest parts of dinner was the fact that we were puzzled by about 3/4 of the menu items.  That’s when Google came in handy.  On my crackberry, I looked up things like “escabeche”, “purslane”, “branzini”, and “pintade”.  We were so ghetto but it was very educational.

Wednesdays

I like Wednesdays. It’s not because half the week is done but because it’s the day that Jes and I go out to eat. On some days we go all out and try a new fancy restaurant. On some days we just go out to a local restaurant. Regardless, it’s an excuse for us to not make a mess of the kitchen and to be gluttonous.

Last night, we decided to go somewhere local and it happened to be a game night too. So, we hung out at Paragon at one of their outdoor tables and watched the crowd come through. It was a sunny, breezy afternoon with blue skies and I had a nice cool glass of Riesling and a hot steamy bowl of mussels sitting in front of me. Ahh…that certainly hits the spot.

nice work

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve had an intern for a few weeks now and yesterday was her last day with us.  She did a great job and I had a great time having her by my side.  It’s so neat to have a student who enjoys learning and absorbs everything around her.

Here’s the basket of goodies that she left for me.  The best part of it all was the variety of jarred items that she made for me.  I got some strawberry preserves, apricot preserves, jarred pears, and homemade relish!  I can’t wait to try them all!

Best of luck, Angie!
