Thank you, Mr. Turkey.

Thanksgiving Menu

It’s Thanksgiving, my 2nd most favorite holiday of the year!!!

Things I’m thankful for:

  • my health – no H1N1 yet!!
  • my job – hooray for regular paychecks in a down economy!
  • my family’s health – parents are thriving, husband is exercising again, and brother/joy are super happy and in love
  • plenty of friends around me at home and at work – they keep me sane
  • my dog – keeps me entertained and gets me out the door at least twice per day

The turkey is in the oven and all the ingredients for the sides are waiting their turn for a trip to the stove.  We’re making dinner for the Masayas and Yuans this year and the menu is complete with all the regular fixings.

Just in case you can’t read the chef’s writing, the menu is as follows:

Roasted Turkey

Shiitake Mushroom Gravy

Haricot Verts

Mashed Potatoes

Baked Sweet Potatoes

Spinach Salad

Cranberry Compote

Baked Ham

Creamed Corn

Crescent Rolls

Stuffing

Happy Thanksgiving!

7 and 14 years later

barrels

Today marks our 7th Wedding Anniversary.  I also figured out that we’ve been “together” for 14!  Whut?!  Crazy.  It’s been a blast so far and we went to Napa for the weekend to celebrate.  Koa came along and he was surprisingly well-behaved.  We took him to Fleury, a very small winery that accepts dogs inside their tasting/barrel room.

Westin

We also stayed at the brand-new Westin that also allows dogs to stay without an additional fee! For dinner we went to La Toque and had a fantastic one-Michelin-star meal complete with wine pairings.

Bouchon

On Sunday morning we also had brunch at Bouchon.  I finally got to have their famous salmon rillette and it was just as tasty as I had hoped.  On our way back to SF, we stopped at the outlets and did a little shopping to round out the trip.

Tonight we had a quiet Monday evening with some homemade lasagna that I prepared while Jes was finishing up his last meeting at work.  Happy Anniversary to my bestest friend in the whole wide world!!

Italy Part 3: Pisa & Cinque Terre, Sept 8-10

I can’t believe it’s been a month since we said goodbye to Cinque Terre.  That’s crazy.  Well, here is a recap of our visit to Pisa and Cinque Terre:

Leaning Tower of Pisa

On Tuesday (9/8), we left Florence by hopping on a train and headed out to Cinque Terre.  On our way there, we stopped at Pisa to say “Buon Giorno” to the famous leaning tower.  At the Pisa train station, we dropped off our luggage (yes, it’s safe) and hopped on the bus.  It dropped us off at the piazza and it looked like we were at Epcot Center.  The Leaning Tower was just standing there in its glorious tiltedness with tourists gathered all around taking the requisite “holding up the tower” photo.  Of course, I took one but we didn’t stay much longer than that.  Instead, we walked down the street for some lunch and walked back to the train station.

Monterosso

The train ride from Pisa to La Spezia was comfy but the train to Monterosso was crowded.  Most of the ride was through a series of tunnels and we were pleasantly surprised by the blue ocean that appeared each time we came out of one of them.  Cinque Terre is made up of 5 (cinque=five in Italian) villages and ours was the last stop.  Once we arrived, it was such a nice change of scenery and pace.  It was warm and breezy with not many cars or even bicycles around.  The beach is rocky but there were plenty of people out in the water and sunning on the rented chairs.

il Casello

We spent lots of time just hanging out by the water, drinking house wine, eating gelato, and reading.  After a week of walking, sightseeing, and busy schedules, we were SO ready for some lounging around in the sun.

Vernazza

We also took a hike from Monterosso to Vernazza, which was more treacherous and difficult than we had expected.  We both wore flip-flops and didn’t really bother bringing much water.  Fortunately the view was lovely but my quads were burning by the end from all the stairs I had to climb.

Vernazza

Vernazza is another small village that seemed to have a larger number of old people.  I think it bummed Jes out a bit.  We had some yummy focaccia pizza and browsed the shops before heading back to Monterosso.  Luckily we didn’t have to hike back and took the train instead.

Miky

pesto

For dinner, we ate a Restaurante Miky on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights.  It had a Michelin sticker on the door and was a great tip-off for us.  On the first night, we had an awesome dinner of mussels, anchovies, and lobster gnocchi.  There were so many other items on the menu that looked good so we made reservations for the next day as we waited for the check.  On the second night, I had a yummy frutti di mare and a very interesting cheetos-shaped pasta with pesto.  Jes also ordered a fish baked inside a salt dome.  They presented it at tableside and it was very tender and flavorful.

UCLA dollar

On Wednesday afternoon (09/09/09!), we hung out at Fast Bar and contributed to their wall of US dollar bills.  I drew the traditional UCLA logo and we pinned it smack-dab in the middle of the bar.  It’s nice to know that we’ve left a piece of us behind in such an awesome little village on the other side of the world.

frutti di mare

I also had another fantastic plate of frutti di mare at a beachside eatery one afternoon.  Cinque Terre is known for their pesto and seafood and boy did I take advantage of that.  I can’t tell you how many mussels and clams I ate during those two days.  It’s a good thing I learned how to like bivalves.

We had a great time in Cinque Terre and had some tasty tasty seafood.  I also had a really good lemon sorbet paired with raspberry sorbet on our last night there.  Mmmm…

Here are all 152 photos from Pisa and Cinque Terre.

My 34th Birthday

I’m officially 34 years and 1 week old today so I thought I’d post some photos from my 34th birthday.  After spending my Birthday Eve Weekend in LA celebrating with Brother and the rest of the family, I had a few quieter celebrations back in SF.  It was surely a good way to round out the week.

ice cream cake

On Monday, the actual day of my birthday, I flew back up on a 6 am flight and got to work by 9-ish.  My manager was kind enough to let me go in a little later than usual, which was nice.  I’m part of a birthday celebration pool so the co-worker that pulled my name out of hat this year brought me a birthday treat at lunchtime.  It was an ice cream cake from Fenton’s and I also treated myself to what we call “Birthday Cheetos”.  So, I got a photo of me with my cake and the orange dust on my thumb.  Awesome.

MoMo's

My buddies at work also heard that Jes would be working late that evening so they treated me to a Happy Hour at MoMo’s just down the street from my house.  They had $4 martinis and $3 appetizers that really hit the spot.  This is the photo we sent to Ranee from my iPhone.

Fleur de Lys

On Tuesday, Jes took me to Fleur de Lys for dinner.  The staff was friendly and attentive and the food was amazing.  To top off the night, Chef Hubert Keller came out and I got to meet him!  He’s as nice as he appears on TV and kept asking me if I liked the food.

birthday dessert

They also brought out a special dessert made of a butter cookie flower on top of a chocolate mousse.  Yum.

So, it was another memorable birthday and I’m feeling pretty lucky right now.  Here’s to another fun-filled year of life!!  Cheers!

Back to Downtown for another 30th

Surprise!

Last weekend I flew down to LA to surprise Brother for his 30th birthday.  He was a little bummed out during the week leading up to it and I was lucky enough to find $39 fares on Southwest just the Sunday before.  On Friday night, we flew down and Johnny got home around 11 pm and was speechless when he walked in and saw me just hanging out in the kitchen.  He just had this dumbfounded look on his face so I made him redo his reaction for a photo.

Copa d'Oro

On Saturday night, we went to Josie Restaurant (in Santa Monica) for dinner with his two friends Ben and Tiffany.  We got there kinda early so we stopped for Happy Hour at Copa d’ Oro, which had a tasty cocktail menu of drinks for only $5 each.  Score!  At Josie’s, we had a yummy meal that was easily shared by all 6 of us.  Earlier that day, we were talking about going out for drinks after dinner and Joy jumped in and said “We should take them to Golden Gopher.”  She had planned a suprise party for Johnny the week before and we gave her a good excuse to head out there.

At Golden Gopher, we got settled in the patio and slowly Brother’s friends started to trickle in.  He was a little confused but so happy to see that there was more planned for his birthday afterall. They also made me take a jager bomb, which was nasty nasty nasty.

Cousins

The cousins, Pish and Debbie, also happened to be at a wedding around the corner and stopped by too.

Danger Dog

The night would not be complete without a late-night “Danger Dog”.  We walked down the street and found a cart parked just outside.  I got a tasty bacon-wrapped dog topped with onions, ketchup, mustard, AND MAYO?!  Soooooooo tasty tasty.

It’s crazy to think that just 4 years ago we were at Broadway Bar (around the corner from Golden Gopher) celebrating my 30th and Brother’s 26th.  It turned out to be pretty cool to be coincidentally celebrating Brother’s 30th just around the corner.  Funny how things work out like that sometimes.  Happy Birthday, Brother!

Morning Run; Afternoon Fun

I'm ready to go!

This morning Jes and I ran the Plate to Plate 5K, which is a really easy/flat course that follows the same route that I run almost everyday.  The bonus is that just before the 3-mile mark, you turn into the baseball stadium, run along the outfield wall, cross third base, run across Home Plate, run across 1st base, and then finish the run across the bridge where we started.

t-shirt

It was a pretty fun run considering it had a pretty late start time of 9 am, was located right outside of my house, and comes with a free ticket to the Giants game the same day.  I also managed to squeak out a 5K Personal Record of 27:41 (unofficial, from my watch).  Yipee!

Giants Dog

In the afternoon, we went back across the street to enjoy an afternoon at AT&T Park.  The game started at 1:05 pm so we had lunch there: Giants Dog with all the fixins, Gilroy Garlic Fries, and Chicken Tenders.

juice box

I also snuck in my “juice boxes” and the cup I got from the last game for two “free” beverages to compliment my lunch.  The morning started out rather gray and cold but the clouds blew away and we were left with a gorgeous day at the park.

view from our seats

Our nosebleed seats had an awesome view of the field below, the harbor right behind, and the Bay Bridge in the distance.  We also wandered the different levels and watched the sailboats and kayaks in the bay.  I have no idea if the Giants beat the Rockies or not but it was still fun to watch and hang out.  This might be a run that’s worth repeating year after year.

Here are more photos from today.
