Hong Kong Adventures – Part 2

On our second full day, the morning had a slow start. On way out for dim sum, we got separated and my phone went dead. Since I had no way of contacting Jes, I tried to get back into the hotel room to wait for him. Unfortunately, I also got locked out (forgot my key) with KK and it took some time to get a spare key from the front desk. Meanwhile, Jes and Peanut found their way back to our hotel room but Peanut had fallen asleep in the stroller. So, Jes took KK on their own adventure to meet up with Jason, Mom, and Dad.

They went to Tim Ho Wan (a michelin-star restaurant) and had some tasty dumplings.

On their way back to the hotel, they took a double-decker bus and sat up top in the front. KK pretended to drive the bus and enjoyed the view from above.

For dinner, we had plans to meet up with the family in a restaurant located over a wet market. It’s on Java Road and apparently it was made famous by Anthony Bourdain.

The food was really good here. Here’s the salt and pepper pork and drunken prawns.

We also had razor clams and a few other tasty dishes. One of the best parts of the  meal was the beer that was served in ice-cold bowls. Their tea was particularly good too!

We had a great dinner with lots of tasty food and fun times with the family.

15th Anniversary

IMG_9312

Jes and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary (11/5-11/9/17) in Kauai without the kids. My parents came up to watch them for the week and we were able to get some rest and just hang out together like we used to.

IMG_9306

We booked our flight through United with miles and although it wasn’t Hawaiian, it got us there in once piece and we were able to upgrade to Economy Plus. I had some sparkling wine and watched TWO full-length movies!!! I watched the live action version of Beauty and the Beast and then Cars 3. It was so different sitting on a plane without having to get up out of my seat every 15 minutes.

IMG_9337

Our first stop after picking up the rental car was Costco. We picked up a giant bottle of mai tai and I also found these honey furikake puffs that are so tasty. I wanted to pick up a few extra bottles of Koloa Rum but knew that we wouldn’t be able to carry them onto the plane.

IMG_9335

We later checked in to Sheraton Kauai and then went to the beach bar for a drink and snack.  Ah…mai tai…

IMG_9363

This trip also felt like a “run-cation”. I ran 3 days in a row and two of them were with Jes! So fun!

IMG_9364

We were up early and I got this photo of the surf with the moon still awake.

IMG_9515

Loved running along the water and this awesome side street with a gorgeous view of the mountains and fields.

IMG_9514

IMG_9376

One of the places we had to visit was Princeville. It’s now called the St. Regis Hotel but it’s where we stayed for our honeymoon.  We had brunch at the restaurant that has a gorgeous view of Hanalei Bay.

IMG_9391

We also recreated a photo we took 15 years ago.

Kauai

IMG_9469

On one morning, we visited the Koloa Rum Tasting Room. It’s a free tasting and featured their dark rum, spiced rum, coconut rum, and coffee rum.

IMG_9464

Their gift shop was chockful of cool stuff including these giant flasks!

IMG_9459

We had some tasty food while we were there. One of our breakfasts was at Tip Top Motel and Cafe. The loco moco was delicious.

IMG_9479

We also found Koloa Fish Market and picked up a plate lunch and some poke.

IMG_9480

IMG_9549

On our last night, we had a reservation with Kauai Ono, which is a catering chef that has one seating per night under a tent at Princeville Ranch. All the ingredients are local and the communal tables create a fun place to meet new people.

IMG_9557

We sat across from a couple from San Rafael that was in Kauai to celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary. We had a fun conversation as the chef served us 5 courses.

IMG_9555

We had seared beef heart over mashed breadfruit, a cucumber salad, seared marlin over a kale salad, brisket cooked with lemongrass and paired with Japanese purple sweet potato.

IMG_9558

Dessert was a mochi churro with chocolate coconut dipping sauce. Tasty.

IMG_9542

On our last day, we spent about 6 hours in a cabana that we rented for the day. It was right on the beach and had the perfect amount of shade and breeze to keep us comfy with easy access to the ocean and pool.

IMG_9520

I read, took a nap, played in the ocean, and spent some quality time with the husband.

IMG_9522

IMG_9530

Oh and did I mention there was food and drink service?! We simply put up a flag and someone would come by to take our order. So nice.

IMG_9415

The Sheraton had an awesome location with direct access to the beach and some gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. IMG_9431

IMG_9428

IMG_9435

Our hotel room had a garden view but you could actually see the ocean from the lanai. Not bad for a discounted $189/night rate.

IMG_9450

IMG_9570

On the morning of our return flight, we went back to the beach one more time and found a monk seal napping on the beach too.

IMG_9569

IMG_9579

Our flight was delayed 2 hours but we had plenty of bar time at the airport to chill out. It was also much easier to tolerate the delay without the kids in town.

IMG_9580

Luckily, we finally got on the plane and it was a 4.5-hour flight. We had a great time together in Kauai and 4  days away was a good amount of time for us to regroup, get some rest, and miss the kids.  Good times…

Two Weeks Off

IMG_7828
I’ve had the past two weeks off and it’s been nice to have some alone time to reflect and reset before starting a new job. On the first day, Holly called and said she was still in town so she brought the kids over for dinner and I actually had time to shop and cook for them!

IMG_7835
On one of the days, Teresa got flexed off so we met up in Oakland to do some studying. Then I treated her to a sushi lunch to thank her for all that she’s done for me these past few months as I was deciding what to do with my life/career.

IMG_8012
Much of my time, aside from doing laundry, has been dedicated to studying for my IBCLC exam. One day I couldn’t sit still at home so I made a pedicure appointment. It forced me to really sit down and read. It was very productive and relaxing at the same time.

IMG_8033
One of the things I also wanted to do on my time off was volunteer in KK’s class at least once. I signed up for one of their Wednesday science hours and it was really cool to be a part of her class.

IMG_8043
On one of my last days, I had lunch with Ranee. She was flexed off for the afternoon so it was perfect. We met up in Rockridge and had a fun Italian meal together.

IMG_8057
I also had the chance to go out for a Mom’s Night Out with the neighborhood moms. Jes took the kids to Chipotle while I shared two pitchers of margaritas with these lovely ladies. It’s so nice to know that we live next to some really nice (and fun) people.

On both Fridays, I had lunch with Eleen and got to catch up with her. She’s always up for some boba so it’s great! Too bad I didn’t get any photos.

So, tomorrow is the first of two days of orientation. Wednesday will be my first official day at Kaiser and the schedule looks to be pretty easy – tours, getting to know people, getting to know the system, shadowing therapists in various roles. I’m also off on Thursday as my regular day off and it also happens to be my birthday. Perfect!!

Here’s what my typical work week will look like:
Mondays 7:30am-4:00pm (8 hrs)
Tuesdays 7:30am-4:00pm (8 hrs)
Wednesdays 7:30am-6:00pm (10 hrs)
Thursdays OFF
Friday 7:30am-1:30pm (6 hrs)

I’m a little excited but also a little anxious about this whole change. I know the schedule will be better for me and the family. I just hope it’s also a good step forward for my career as well. Wish me luck!

Looooong Weekend

IMG_7401
Peanut’s school was closed on Thursday and Friday, which was butted up against Labor Day weekend so we decided to have a 5-day weekend in Cerritos. Unfortunately, California is going through a crazy heat wave (hotter in SF than Cerritos!) so we didn’t get to do as much as we usually do. Instead, we spent a lot of time indoors at the Magical House and had a couple fancy dinners.

IMG_7411
On Thursday, we had big dinner at Souplantation with almost the whole family on both sides. It was chaotic but we  had a good time.

IMG_7423
On Friday afternoon, we went to Happy Hour with Johnny and Joy for some $1 oysters and some time without the kids. For a change, I didn’t have to share my oysters with KK.

IMG_7431
I also took a short trip to Walmart with just my mom and brother. I had forgotten how easy it is to pick up diapers when you don’t have to carry around a 2-year-old and diaper bag.

IMG_7433
That same night, Jes and I went out for a late 10:00 pm dinner at Osteria Mozza. It was not only later than my bedtime but it was also in LA (on Melrose and Highland to be exact). Fortunately, Jes took a nap and I got some rest before our little outing.

IMG_7434
We ordered smoked mozzarella with prosciutto, grilled octopus, squid ink pasta with crab and uni, and a grilled fish. These are some terrible photos of the dishes but good enough for me to remember.

IMG_7482
On Saturday night, we had a family dinner at one of our favorite places, Lawry’s!! It was fun to have all 4 cousins together with the grandparents. The last time I had dined there was November 2014 (just the two of us for our anniversary). The last time the family dined there together was when KK was September 2013 for my birthday. Crazy.

IMG_7467
This time, we celebrated Jesse’s birthday. KK also got her very own slice of prime rib with the fixings.

IMG_7465

IMG_7479

IMG_7513
On Sunday, we spent the majority of the day with Jes’ family.

IMG_7540
We had dim sum for lunch, spent the afternoon playing at their house, and then another birthday dinner for Jes.

We left Cerritos yesterday at 7:00 am, made two stops, went outlet shopping for a couple hours, and got home by 5:00 pm. That left us plenty of time to do a load of laundry and play outside with neighbors. What a fun (but very hot) weekend!!

Day in Napa

IMG_6773
Today we celebrated Ranee’s 40th in Napa.

IMG_6764
She made all the plans but her husband Jamie surprised her with a party bus to Napa with her friends. We all met at Pleasant Hill BART station and surprised her.

IMG_4112
The first stop was Hagafen Cellars where we shared bubbles and a bunch of picnic items that Ranee had packed for us.

IMG_6790
The next stop was Domaine Carneros, which looked like a French chateau.

IMG_6800
We had a private tasty and tour.

IMG_4217

IMG_4143

IMG_4148

IMG_6794

IMG_6833
We had a little time left on the bus so we stopped at Hog Island Oyster Co. for birthday oysters, rose ice cream, and more wine.

IMG_6836

IMG_6854

IMG_4207

IMG_6874
The party bus was still hoppin’ on the drive back to the BART station. What a fun day without the kids!!

Happy 40th, Ranee!!!

Christmas Break 2016

IMG_6545

Christmas Break has come and gone but we had such a nice time with the family. On Christmas morning, Jes went over to Jason and Jia’s to start the roast. They used a blowtorch to brown the outside (as recommended by Thomas Keller himself) and the twins had a front row seat to all the action.

IMG_0012

Then the grandparents came over and the kids had fun playing with them.

IMG_0017

Jes made his tasty standing rib roast complete with all the fixings. These are the Yorkshire pudding pop-overs. Yum.

IMG_4862

IMG_4865

IMG_0100

We also managed to get a family photo with everyone looking at the camera!! Too bad Peanut smudged the lens and I didn’t bother to check until AFTER the photo was taken. Oh well.

IMG_0082

The rest of the week was spent just hanging out with the family.

IMG_0051

KK and Alice got lots of play time together. They can play for hours now with hardly any tears.

IMG_0259

IMG_0035

KK spent an afternoon with Jes’ parents while Peanut napped and had fun catching fish and baking cookies.

IMG_4568

Peanut got a bunch of new outfits for Christmas including this handsome ensemble.

IMG_4853

KK also went out to breakfast with my parents on her own while Mama and Peanut slept in.

IMG_4891

One evening, we had dinner with my side of the family.  I love these traditions. It always starts with a Thai feat and ends with a frenzy of presents for the kids.

IMG_5030

One morning, I wasn’t feeling well and the house didn’t have electricity so the kids went out for a walk at the mall while I slept.  It’s so nice to have family around to help.

IMG_0209

We got to take KK to see Moana while Peanut went to a party with my mom and dad. Parts of the movie were funny and others were so scary they made her cry. Fortunately, she was able to stay in the theater the whole time. It’s an improvement from her first movie (Finding Dory) when she actually had to walk out of the theater and come back in with a lot of coaxing.

IMG_4965

We also took KK and Peanut to Knott’s Berry Farm for the first time. Unfortunately, it was extra crowded that day and the lines were horribly long.

IMG_0154

IMG_0111

We did, however, got some photos with Snoopy – even Santa Snoopy!!

IMG_0197

IMG_0267

On our last day, we had a full day to spend with the family before driving through the night.

IMG_0278

These funny kids loved the dry ice that comes out of the mixers at Creamistry.

IMG_0301

Here’s our annual family photo. Can’t wait to add Brother’s new baby girl to the photo next time!!

IMG_0288

As usual, we got a photo of the kids with the grandparents in front of my childhood home.

IMG_0317

Before heading out, we had dinner with Jes’ family. We got a cute photo of the kids with their Uncle Jason. So sweet.

The drive back was pretty quick. We left at about 7:30pm and the kids passed out right away. The only scary part was thick fog that we encountered mid-way through the drive. The visibility was poor and we had to drive 40 mph for a good 8-mile stretch. Luckily, it didn’t last the whole way and we were home by 1:40am. Not too shabby.
