Turkey and Pepsi

Thanksgiving was spent in SF this year, which initially bummed me out but ended up being almost as satisfying.  Jes made his annual feast and I always find it endearing when I see Jes sitting in front of the oven spying on his precious turkey.

We had the Masayas over this year and they came with Smush and Diesel.  Koa had a good time having company around and being able to enjoy the bounty of treats that were handed out that evening.  One thing that I couldn’t get over was how Diesel looked so much like Pepsi.  The most familiar to me was his black head and little splotch of white on top.  He was just as cuddly but since he’s an indoor dog, he didn’t have that distinct stinkiness that Pepsi had.  I guess that’s a good thing.  Rob and Kelly take very good care of him.  It just made me miss all my doggies who have now passed.

A Celebration of Life

Saturday was a day of sadness and also a celebration of life.  We had the memorial service and burial for Jes’ grandmother who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 97.  During the service, we listened to the eldest uncle talk about her life as a mother and teacher in China and then in the Philippines.  Jason also gave a very touching “memory of my grandmother” eulogy.  Jes helped out as a pallbearer and “A-ma” was laid to rest on a very beautiful afternoon.

Together Again

Last night, we received a very sad phone call.  Jes’ paternal grandmother passed away yesterday morning.   Jes’ paternal grandfather passed away in 2002 and things hadn’t been the same with her since his passing.  In their nineties, they had been together for decades and now they are together once again.  We’ll be driving down on Friday afternoon for the memorial service this weekend.

I’m a melter.

We had a fun time in Sequoia this weekend. The weather was much more pleasant than I had anticipated. The weather forecast said it was supposed to be 100 degrees but it wasn’t. The campsite was convenient and had lots of shade. We also got to see lots of really big trees. We visited Auto Log, Tunnel Log, and the General Sherman Tree. I also learned how to play Blokus, which Ryan brought on the trip. Jes hiked 6 miles with the Bangs while I stayed behind with the Sokol-Juns for a mini-hike to some little pools in the stream nearby and played 4 games of Blokus. On Saturday afternoon, as we were touring the different tourist sites, we stopped at Auto Log and I used my little Canon digi to help prop up Michelle’s camera for a group photo. When the photos was taken, I forgot to take it back grab the camera and I didn’t realize it was missing until we were at the next site. To my dismay, it was gone by the time we drove back to the site…*sniff* Oh man, Jes was really mad at me and I was kicking myself the rest of the day. I’m still kicking myself. I filed a report at the Lost and Found but I doubt it will show up. Boo…it had some cool photos that Jes took on his 6-mile hike.

So we’re back in our condo with no furniture, no appliances, and no internet. I’m in the 4th Floor clubhouse again trying to upload some photos. This might take a while.

Oh yeah, it sprinkled today! I can’t believe it was at least 90 degrees in Fresno but in the low 60s as we drove into the SF area.

UPDATE:  Here are the photos from our camping trip.

on our way

I’m on my way up to SF now and blogging from my blackberry. Last night we packed our car to the top and Koa got his last walk and visit with Kuma before we left. It’s official. We are out of here! We dropped off Koa an hour ago and said goodbye to my parents. My mom was really sad and so was I. But we have another car’s worth of stuff to haul up so I will see my parents again when they drive it all up with Koa in tow. It’s a big day and I couldn’t help getting a little emotional this morning. I’m just happy that I got to say goodbye to everyone. I even got to give my little brother a big hug this morning on his way to ComicCon.

So that’s it for now. I will miss all of you back home. And I’m excited to see all of you in SF! Let the new adventure begin!

See ya in a month.

The movers were here today and they came through like a tornado. It’s amazing how quickly they can get everything wrapped out and thrown into the back of a truck. Over the phone we were quoted $0.41 per pound but when they arrived the head guy started charging by the cubic foot. Hm…pretty shady. So, when it was all totaled up, Jes was not happy with the final charge so he called the main office and insisted that we be charged by the pound. The moving guy tried to play it off like the amount would be the same but Jes insisted that they go have the truck weighed. So, he’s now on his way to a weigh station in Long Beach and I’m at home sitting in my empty livingroom on the floor just trying to let this all sink in.

This is all very surreal. All of my belongings are packed away in some random truck and I won’t be able to access any of it for at least a month. I actually let them take our wedding album and I’m starting regret that. I just hope they don’t lose any of the boxes or damage anything. As they took away our boxes and furniture, I really couldn’t watch them. I put on a brave face but it made me really sad and I was on the verge of tears. It’s really happening. We’re really leaving. Jes is supposed to catch a 7:00 flight this evening but I’m not so sure he’s going to make it.

Update (11:17 pm): We all know that Jes is a pain in the ass but this time it came in handy.  Because he insisted on having the trunk weighed, he managed to save us at least $1000.  He drove all the way to Long Beach and totally called their bluff.  We ended up getting almost exactly what they initially quoted ($900) instead of the final $2000 that the moving guy asked for.  He also got back in time to catch his flight.  We had a happy ending to a very stressful day.
