Lunch with the Girls

Holly made plans for us to meet up for lunch on Tuesday as a mini baby shower for me.  I drove Holly and my mom to Santa Monica for a little shopping at a baby supplies boutique and then we met up with Patty and Patti for lunch at Joe’s on Abbot Kinney in Venice.  We were seated at a corner table and had a delicious meal.  It was also a really good deal!  We all had the prix fixe meal of any appetizer, any entree, and any dessert for $19!

Here’s a photo of my chicken ravioli.  It was delicious.

The girls gave me some cute and thoughtful gifts for me and Kumquat and the whole event was really sweet.  It was also fun having my mom there too.  Thanks for planning such a fun afternoon, Hols!

Afterward, I stopped in to see little Andrew when I dropped Holly off at her house.  He’s grown quite a bit since I first met him in September.  At about 100 days old, he’s smiley and has filled out nicely.

Here are more photos.

Christmas Weekend

On Christmas Eve, we left SF around 7:30 am and arrived in Cerritos just around 2:30 pm.  Koa enjoyed the car ride and we found ourselves in 75-degree weather once we got to The Magical House.

Brother and Joy were already there and they were in charge of dinner that evening.  We exchanged gifts that afternoon before dinner and Koa got a new friend.  It’s a pretty funny-looking monkey that squeaks and we got a good laugh while he chewed on Crazy Eyes’ head. We got some stuff from Thailand and the highlight gift was Jes’ new beerlao t-shirt.

Dinner consisted of pot roast with gravy and mashed potato, kimchee fried rice, kalbi, and a bunch of pan-chan.  It was a bizarre combination but that’s what my parents had requested and it was all tasty.

On Christmas morning, we went to church with Jason and Jia.  Pops was giving the message that day so that was cool.  We were greeted by old friends of the family and they were all congratulating us on our expected Kumquat.  They all said to us, “Your father is very excited to have a granddaughter.”

After church, we stopped at The Magical House to pick up my favorite treat, Sakoo Sai Moo.  I ate them up so fast that I didn’t even have the chance to take a photo this time so I’m posting an old photo.  It was THAT good.  The rest of the afternoon/evening was spent hanging out in Buena Park while the 27-lb standing rib roast cooked in the oven.

The family came over and we stuffed ourselves with prime rib, yorkshire pudding, salad, creamed corn, and Jes’ mom’s sticky rice.  I was so full and tired by the end of the night that I went to bed early before everyone had left.  I know that comes as a real shocker.

It was a fun Christmas weekend.  It’s always nice to spend time with family and eat lots and lots of food.

4 more months to go!

Today I’m officially 5 months pregnant and entering Week 23.  In four months, I’ll be experiencing the worst pain and hopefully the best joy of my life.  Until then, I’m just trying to stay healthy and strong.

Yesterday, I did a little Christmas shopping and found myself in the maternity section at Gap once again for their 40%-off-everything sale.  I picked up four more tops for all ranging from $7-9 each.  Woot!  Also, while I was in the dressing room, I got a long hard look at myself in the mirror.  We don’t have a full-length mirror at home so this was pretty eye-opening for me.  I think in the past 2 weeks, I’ve felt more preggo than ever and the mirror confirmed it.  No wonder I’m having a hard time zipping up my jackets lately.  *sigh*

Not only has my mid-section changed but my joints are feeling really loose.  I get the occasional hip pain at work but just the other day at work, I was trying to get up from a bench when my hip flexor went into a super spasm.  I couldn’t move and it left me in tears until it was able to relax.  Luckily I’m surrounded by a great group of therapists who knew how to help me get through it.

Today I spent the morning purging some of my stuff.  I feel most proud of was getting rid of 3 years worth of magazines.  Next job will be to purge some of my clothes.  It’s all to make room for Kumquat and her stuff.  Once it’s all cleared out, the nesting can begin!

A Tree for Kumquat

Last night we stopped at the tree lot and picked up a cute 4-foot tree.  This is me and Kumquat (now the size of a papaya) at the 22-week mark in front of a much taller tree.  I have a full-fledged baby bump now and it’s getting harder to breathe with all my innards being squished upward.  Kumquat’s also been practicing her kungfu moves quite a bit and 4:00 pm is one of her favorite times of day to be awake.

This year’s tree was small enough to fit in the back seat of the car but then decided to place it on top of our side table in the livingroom to give it more height.  This evening, I decorated it with lights and our set of commemorative ornaments.  This year’s ornament is a little silver frame and I’m going to put one of Kumquat’s ultrasound images inside.  I’ll post it once I’m done printing and framing it.

And the answer is…

Hey, Y’all!  I LOVED reading all your comments over the weekend!  I went to my ultrasound appointment and Kumquat was a little uncooperative at first but we got an answer!  It’s a GIRL!!!  The doc pointed out the little line in the middle and her booty is pretty darn cute.  And check out that femur!  Maybe she’ll be tall.

Sorry, Kumquat – this will be the only time I will publicly humiliate you by showing off your girly parts on beakatude.

She spent most of the time curled up face-down so the technician had a hard time getting a good shot of her heart but everything else checked out fine.  She has nice long arms and legs that have been punching and kicking me these past couple weeks.  The spine and brain look good and the kidneys looked great.  When we tried to get her to flip over onto her back, she did it only briefly and then I watched her flip back over.  At one point I think she was on her head in mid-somersault.  Sheesh.  After the technician gave up on getting an image of the heart, the doctor came in to take a look for himself.  He got all four chambers of the heart and the aortic arch was all good.

Here’s a 3D image of her nuzzling the placenta/umbilical cord.  I guess she likes to snuggle up and get cozy like her mommy.  The doctor just said she was being shy today.

So there you have it!  The guessing is over and most of you got what you were hoping for!  When the technician said it was a little girl, it brought a big smile to our faces and I almost had tears of joy at one point.  Now, when can I start shopping?!

Pink or Blue?!

I’ll be reaching the half-way point this Sunday at 20 weeks. Phew!  That was quick!  This Monday afternoon is when I’m having my anatomy ultrasound to check out all the body parts and organs. We’ll also get to find out if Kumquat is a boy or a girl. Well, that is if he/she cooperates.

Which do I prefer? Surprisingly, I don’t have a preference anymore. All my life I thought I wanted a boy but this pregnancy has really changed my mind and the possibility of having a girl has been just as appealing to me for the first time.  Hmm…is that a sign?

Wondering what you’re all rootin’ for so post your guess in the comments section!  I should have an answer for you by Monday night!!
