Welcome to the Terrible Twos!

Birthday Boy

It’s Little J’s 2nd Birthday and I was there to share his birthday dinner of turkey loaf and cake.  He wore a birthday crown and was a little scared of the birthday candles.  He opened up his gift of Tonka trunks a garage rampy toy I bought him and he seemed to be very excited about it.  Happy Birthday, Little Man!

Here are the rest of the photos.

It’s a zoo in here!!

Team Tiger

Attack!

We’ve always said that working in the hospital sometimes feels like being in a zoo.  So…for the Friday before Halloween, we dressed up as zoo animals.  Teresa and I have always called ourselves Team Tiger so obviously we were bright orange Cheetos with black duct tape stripes.  It was fun working in a sweatsuit but boy was I sweatin’!

The rest of the gang included two zebras, two monkeys, a big cuddly panda, and even a zoo keeper!  We also made ears and a tail for one of our grumpier nurses and he actually strutted around as an honorary tiger all day long.  We got a lot of looks and compliments for the tiger costume and there was certainly no subtly to our outfits.  It was fun but I’m glad we only have to do it once a year.  From ordering and waiting for the sweats to arrive in the mail to cutting a grip of stripes out of duct tape to sewing felt onto headbands, it’s a lot of work.  Maybe I can just wear this costume every year for the next 10 years.

Happy Hour

Afterward, we went out for Happy Hour with Dr. Mai, who was visiting from LA.  We went to Ben and Nick’s and had a great time catching up and being silly just like old times.  Come back soon, Mai!!

Here are the photos!!

Ryan [barely] survived.

group photo

A few years ago Ryan said “Dude, when it’s time for Vyl to turn 30 I will die.”  Well, she turned 30 a couple weeks ago and so did her college friend Tammy.  To celebrate, they reserved the private room at Nihon last Friday (10/2/09) and we had a bumpin’ time eating sushi, drinking whiskey, and hanging out.

tiara

Vyl had a tiara but refused to wear it all night so everyone else took turns wearing it for her.  Ryan also finally showed up after dinner and he was as alive as could be.  I guess turning 30 is not that catastrophic after all.   At the end of the night, we were still hungry and grabbed crepes from the crepe truck nearby.

Here are photos from the party.

My 34th Birthday

I’m officially 34 years and 1 week old today so I thought I’d post some photos from my 34th birthday.  After spending my Birthday Eve Weekend in LA celebrating with Brother and the rest of the family, I had a few quieter celebrations back in SF.  It was surely a good way to round out the week.

ice cream cake

On Monday, the actual day of my birthday, I flew back up on a 6 am flight and got to work by 9-ish.  My manager was kind enough to let me go in a little later than usual, which was nice.  I’m part of a birthday celebration pool so the co-worker that pulled my name out of hat this year brought me a birthday treat at lunchtime.  It was an ice cream cake from Fenton’s and I also treated myself to what we call “Birthday Cheetos”.  So, I got a photo of me with my cake and the orange dust on my thumb.  Awesome.

MoMo's

My buddies at work also heard that Jes would be working late that evening so they treated me to a Happy Hour at MoMo’s just down the street from my house.  They had $4 martinis and $3 appetizers that really hit the spot.  This is the photo we sent to Ranee from my iPhone.

Fleur de Lys

On Tuesday, Jes took me to Fleur de Lys for dinner.  The staff was friendly and attentive and the food was amazing.  To top off the night, Chef Hubert Keller came out and I got to meet him!  He’s as nice as he appears on TV and kept asking me if I liked the food.

birthday dessert

They also brought out a special dessert made of a butter cookie flower on top of a chocolate mousse.  Yum.

So, it was another memorable birthday and I’m feeling pretty lucky right now.  Here’s to another fun-filled year of life!!  Cheers!

Back to Downtown for another 30th

Surprise!

Last weekend I flew down to LA to surprise Brother for his 30th birthday.  He was a little bummed out during the week leading up to it and I was lucky enough to find $39 fares on Southwest just the Sunday before.  On Friday night, we flew down and Johnny got home around 11 pm and was speechless when he walked in and saw me just hanging out in the kitchen.  He just had this dumbfounded look on his face so I made him redo his reaction for a photo.

Copa d'Oro

On Saturday night, we went to Josie Restaurant (in Santa Monica) for dinner with his two friends Ben and Tiffany.  We got there kinda early so we stopped for Happy Hour at Copa d’ Oro, which had a tasty cocktail menu of drinks for only $5 each.  Score!  At Josie’s, we had a yummy meal that was easily shared by all 6 of us.  Earlier that day, we were talking about going out for drinks after dinner and Joy jumped in and said “We should take them to Golden Gopher.”  She had planned a suprise party for Johnny the week before and we gave her a good excuse to head out there.

At Golden Gopher, we got settled in the patio and slowly Brother’s friends started to trickle in.  He was a little confused but so happy to see that there was more planned for his birthday afterall. They also made me take a jager bomb, which was nasty nasty nasty.

Cousins

The cousins, Pish and Debbie, also happened to be at a wedding around the corner and stopped by too.

Danger Dog

The night would not be complete without a late-night “Danger Dog”.  We walked down the street and found a cart parked just outside.  I got a tasty bacon-wrapped dog topped with onions, ketchup, mustard, AND MAYO?!  Soooooooo tasty tasty.

It’s crazy to think that just 4 years ago we were at Broadway Bar (around the corner from Golden Gopher) celebrating my 30th and Brother’s 26th.  It turned out to be pretty cool to be coincidentally celebrating Brother’s 30th just around the corner.  Funny how things work out like that sometimes.  Happy Birthday, Brother!

Surprises for Debbie

cousins

On Friday night, Brother and Joy flew up to visit and our first stop was Vaso Azzurro in Mountain View where Debbie was having a surprise bday dinner with friends.  I told Pish that I would be there but we told no one that I’d be bringing some extra guests.  Debbie was genuinely surprised to see us and it was a lot of fun being there to celebrate her special day.  It’s always great to see the cousins again.
