Cheese!

The brother emailed this to me today. This is so typical of me and my brother together. Here’s an example…
Even when Johnny and I try to smile, my dad tries to prevent the “cheesy smile” by saying, “No teeth, OK?” Well, then it turns out like this…
I think showing teeth is good. Don’t you think?

Sunday with The Jangs

We had visitors this afternoon! Auntie Jeanie, cousins Hannah and Abby, and PoPo (Grandma) came over to hang out with us and celebrate both of our 30th birthdays. Jes and I also managed to wash both of our cars and PoPo even helped! Hannah had a fun time playing with Koa and I think Abby is feeling a little more at ease with having him around in the house. Jesse made some handmade gnocchi for dinner (it was yummy!) and the girls gave us handmade birthday cards (very cute!).

It’s mah birfday!

The day that I turn 30 is here! It’s not bad being the big three-O. I received a bunch of e-mails, text messages, IM’s, and phone calls from pals all around. Aw…I feel so loved. Unfortunately, my birthday fell on a Wednesday and I had to go to work. I didn’t even get off early today!! What’s up with that?! Anyway, to top off the birthday celebration, I’m going out to dinner with Jes’ parents and dessert with the brother. Oh yeah…Happy Birthday, Brother!!
Let’s reflect on the past 30 years, shall we?
-Born during the time of bell-bottoms and orange carpet.
-Lived in what is now Korea Town back when white people still lived there
-I moved to Norwalk when I was 3 and got my first puppy!
-The brother was born on my 4th birthday.
-I learned to play the piano in 1st grade and the flute in 4th grade.
-Moved to Cerritos when I was 8.
-Attended a ghetto-fabulous Junior High where I learned how to hairspray my bangs.
-Started good ol’ WHS in 9th grade where I met some of my closest friends.
-Moved to UCLA and became best friends with my future hubby.
-Moved to Oak-Town for graduate school in 1999.
-Got married and ran my first marathon at age 27.
-Bought my first home at age 28.
Hm…not bad. Bring on the next 30!! Woohoo!!

More birthday meals!

I went out to Lawry’s with the family last night to celebrate our birthdays. It’s become a tradition to go out to Lawry’s with the family at least once a year for the annual prime rib/creamed corn dinner. The food was great, as usual, and since it was Monday, we got double Lawry’s points. Unfortunately it was also Kid’s Night and there were a lot of kids there trying to score a free meal.
Today I had lunch with Sandy. She’s been so busy lately that we haven’t been able to hang out much. So, it was nice to sit down for a 2-hour meal catching up and enjoying some Thai Chicken Pizza at CPK.
It seems like I eat sooooo much more around birthdays and holidays. It’s time to go for a run!

Mutual Understanding

IMG_1421We just got back from Jesse’s cousin’s wedding reception. The reception was pretty standard but Jes had an interesting experience with his grandmother. Grandma (usually referred to as “PoPo”) is a very sweet lady who lives in a studio at the Assisted Living Residence next to Cerritos College. She took care of Jesse when he was a baby so they’ve always had a special bond that required no verbal communication. Exchanges between them usually involve her asking or saying something and Jesse responding with a nod and smile (having no idea what she just said). He’s always had someone to translate in a time of need. Well, today was a little different. We were on our own.

Since we didn’t attend the wedding ceremony, we had the duty of picking her up and taking her to the reception. When we got there, she was pleasantly surprised to see us. As we walked in, she quickly tidied up a bit and started to make some tea for us. So I quietly asked Jes, “uh, does she know we’re taking her somewhere?” It turns out that no one told her ahead of time. OK…I guess we’ll just have to tell her. The problem was that she only speaks Cantonese and neither of us were able to communicate with her. So Jes called his dad and gave the phone to her. Once she was told that we were taking her out for dinner, it was all good. That is, until we suggested that she should bring a sweater. I tried to find one but all she had hanging were a bunch of heavy coats. After some fumbling with broken English and some gestures, she figured it out and spent the next 10 minutes trying to find a sweater in her closet. OK…got the sweater…now we gotta check her shoes. Jes’ mom specifically asked us to make sure she wore proper shoes. So I pulled out a pair of “church shoes” for her. She figured it out and put on one of the them and then decided that the ones she was wearing were fine. OK…those shoes weren’t bad. Time to go!

At the reception, we all sat together at Table 14. Grandma was chillin’…sorta dozing off every now and then. In her old age, I don’t think she remembers many people anymore. At one point, a lady (someone she used to know) came by and tapped her on the shoulder and said “hello” to her. As the lady walked away, Grandma looked at Jes and (in Cantonese) asked him, “do you know who that was?”. Jes shrugged with “I don’t know”. Considering the limited amount of communication they had, they managed to get a good laugh. In fact, Grandma laughed so hard that she had tears in her eyes. That was entertaining…for both of them.

Amtrack Century 2005

Jesse, Jimmy, and Pish finished their first Century today. They rode their bicycles from Irvine down to San Diego in 7.5 hours including 4 rest stops and 1 flat tire. The day started really early – waking up at 5:30, leaving the house by 6:30 and starting at 7:00.
They also had their own personal SAG (Support and Gear) along the ride too. Debbie, Eleen, and I had three cars and we followed each other down – partly alongside them on the bike route and also met up with them at each rest stop. The girls rode in the cars with cell phones, GPS, maps, the route list, and walkie talkies, which really helped!! We even got an emergency call from Jes when he got a flat tire. They called and said, “we’re on the corner of Carlsbad and Beech, can you meet us there?” We punched in the streets, found them, and brought out the bike pump. Who needs the official SAG when the unofficial SAG rocks?!
It was also a big family affair with Pish’s parents and Debbie’s parents along the way with Debbie’s brother and kids at one cheering stop. We also had dinner at Debbie’s brother’s house in San Marcos afterwards. Overall, they looked really strong out there and conquered the hill at Torrey Pines. The weather was nice, they had a view of the beach every once in a while, and had lots of people to take photos, cheer, and embarrass them throughout the day.
Fun day. Great job, boys!! What’s next?
