Rest in Peace, PoPo.

20140530-140716-50836073.jpgToday is a very sad day for us. We lost PoPo this morning and her family was able to be at her bedside to say goodbye.  This photo was taken back in 2007 on Christmas Day.

IMG_4436PoPo was very special to Jesse since she was very involved in his care when he was a baby.  I met her a very long time ago at a family function back in 1995 when she was still living by herself and was a fantastic cook.  Little by little her health declined until the family had to move her to a place where she could be taken care of 24 hours per day.  At that point, she was still rather independent and going to church down the street.  Around that time, she still recognized her family and I remember one wedding that we went to in 2005 where we had our last real interaction with her.  Here is the post.  I’m so thankful that I wrote about it because I wouldn’t have remembered every detail.

DSC_9409Eventually, she needed a higher level of care so she moved to a different place.  Here was the one and only time all four generations were together.  It was in 2012 around Christmas again.  It was the last time Jes and I saw her.

Hannah, Jesse’s cousin, said it perfectly when she posted this on FB today:

weekend recap

IMG_2104

We had a beautiful weekend.  On Saturday morning, I went for a 3-mile run and then hung out along Embarcadero with my little girl.

IMG_2063We also stopped for breakfast and a little street music.

IMG_2089

We had a fun morning before heading home for her nap.

IMG_2115Later that day, we jumped on Caltrain and sat on the floor in the bike car like peasants.  Actually, we felt more like cattle.  Heh heh.

IMG_2136We had dinner at Blue Line Pizza and ordered a thin crust AND deep dish pizza for the 5 of us.  I liked the deep dish one better than the thin but they were both pretty good.  Unfortunately, our table was a bit crowded and I ended up knocking over (AND BREAKING) a wine glass by the end of the meal.  Doh!IMG_2150

After dinner, we took a walk down the street and I got this cute photo of Kumquat with her uncle and daddy.

IMG_2175Our ride home was a lot more comfortable and I was surprised to look down and find the little one asleep next to me.  Maybe there’s hope for our 6-hour flight to Hawaii in a couple weeks.

IMG_2198Sunday was more laid back.  We were home in our pjs for most of the morning.  We did make it outside at least once and I’m glad we did.  It was so sunny and warm!  Who says SF has terrible weather?!

Quick Trip to SoCal

IMG_1505We had to do our taxes in Cerritos this year so it was a good excuse to go home for the weekend.  The drive down on Friday wasn’t too bad (8am-3pm) with two stops.

IMG_1517When we arrived, Alice was there and it was fun to see Kumquat playing with her.

IMG_1539She also enjoyed having tea in the backyard like a regular suburban kid.  My mom also had dinner prepared (of course, it’s the Magical House!) so we enjoyed some Chicken Rice and soup.

IMG_1565On Saturday morning, Brother and Joy came over.

IMG_1596After breakfast, we packed up the kids and headed out to Huntington Beach.  As soon as we got out of the car, Kumquat cried and was in panic mode for the first 20 minutes.

IMG_1584It was nice just being out there on the sand and enjoying the sunshine and view.  It’s funny how neither of the kids were very happy in this picture.

IMG_3165For lunch, I planned a big family gathering to catch up and to also celebrate Kumquat’s 2nd birthday.  My mom picked up an ice cream cake and we ordered all our favorite dishes.  This picture that Brother took cracks me up.

Kumquat was so cute while we all sang “Happy Birthday” to her.

IMG_1631 It was also so nice to see the cousins again.

IMG_1661Later that afternoon, Holly and Andrew came over.  Andrew as a little quieter than usual but it was nice to do some catching up.

IMG_1667Our tax appointment was at 6:30 so Jes and I left and it took the usual hour and a half to get it all done.  There was a bit of a wait so we went to Starbucks to pick up coffee and went back to finish the paperwork when the office assistant called.  Afterward, we had a nice Japanese dinner without the kid.  It’s so rare that we get a date night.  It’s funny (and a little sad) that tax night became date night.

IMG_1686On Sunday morning, we left relatively early and the drive back was easy (9am-4pm) with three stops.  I hate these super short trips to LA but always glad that we did it.  I miss my family.

too short

Weekends are too short.  We’ve had some nice weather lately and we made the most of it on Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday we went out for brunch and to do a little shopping.  I love it when the Gap Friends and Family Sale rolls around.  IMG_1031The St. Patrick’s Day Parade also rolled down Market Street and there were a bunch of people dressed in green and ready to party.

IMG_1065After Kumquat’s nap in the afternoon, we went back outside and had a few drinks at Hi-Dive.  We were all in shorts that day!

IMG_1067On Sunday, I went out for a run in the morning and ran past the burned down construction site that made the news last week.  It’s crazy how close it was to home.

IMG_1102Later in the morning, we went to the California Academy of Sciences. Then we took a long lunch at Pacific Catch where the rolls and poke were pretty ono.  I can’t wait for our trip to Hawaii next month!

When we got home, everyone took a good nap (including me!) and I still managed to get the laundry done.  Oh how I wish I still had one more day.

layover

We got an email a few weeks ago from Dad saying that he and Mom would be taking a 24-hour layover in SF on their way back from a pastor’s conference in Florida.  That was just this past weekend so we got to see them on Sunday.  IMG_0801We met up at Beach Chalet for brunch and were treated to a table right by the window with a clear view of the beach across the street.

IMG_0803We ordered beignets and I had the corned beef hash and eggs.

IMG_0809Yum.  Jia’s eggs benedict with crab was also tasty.IMG_9503

Afterward, we took at walk around the SF Zoo, which was just down the street from the restaurant.  It was fun to see Kumquat run around with her grandpa who got  A LOT of exercise that afternoon.

IMG_0849For dinner, we went to Silver House and feasted on noodles, pork, fish, rice, veggies, and everything else you can think of.  So glad they were able to make a stop to see us!

Jia’s Birthday

IMG_0500Jia’s birthday was on Thursday but we celebrated on Friday night with Japanese tapas in Berkeley.  Jason made a reservation for Kiraku and it was a good thing because they had an hour-long wait for those who did not.

IMG_0516We ordered so many items that I lost track but here is a collection of most of the dishes: 1) Sashimi – including fatty snapper, 2) Salmon with Vinegar Sauce (my favorite of the night), 3) corn tempura with green sea salt, 4) scallops with pesto, 5) raw clam and snow crab salad, 6) pork belly with a soft boiled soy sauce egg on top.  One dish that I also really liked and forgot to take a photo of was the anchovy brocolli – yum.

IMG_0509 We had a really fun and tasty dinner last night.  We also tried to go to CREAM for dessert but the line was out the door and around the corner.  Maybe next time.  Kumquat was also a good sport because we didn’t get home until 10:30!

Happy Birthday, Jia!!
