Bay Bridge

bridge lightsThe Bay Bridge has a special light display that started last month.  It’s on the western span of the bridge and you can see if from The Embarcadero.  I hadn’t seen it yet so after the baby went to sleep, I took Koa for a long walk down to see the lights.

Here’s one part of the show.

Here’s another part of the show.

It’s going to be on display until 2015 and turns on a dusk and turns off at 2am everyday.  Pretty cool!

muniIt was pretty late when it was time to head back so the dog and I took Muni home.  Koa’s ridden Muni and the bus before but I guess it had been a while because when we got on, he was shakin’ in his britches the whole way home.  Silly dog.

Ringing in the New Year

NYEHappy New Year!  This year we rang in the new year with Jason and Jia.  We went to their apartment for a tasty dinner and just hung out watching TV.  Kumquat and Koa played and also begged for cheese and salami.

crankyAt about 8:30 or 9:00, Kumquat really tired and cranky so I helped her fall asleep and in the process fell asleep too.  So I took a quick nap and woke up at 11:00 pm in time to watch the festivities on TV.  When the clock struck 12, it was the beginning of 2013 and Jes was on the toilet and Kumquat had just woken up.  Awesome.

family hugAt 12:02 am, the three of us had a big New Year’s Day hug and I got a big glass of champagne to make up for the tiny sip that I had last year while I was preggo.

IMG_9894 The next day, I was up pretty early and took Koa for a walk to the dog run just next door to the apartment complex.  We got a nice walk by the water and then Koa got to run off-leash for a bit.

I was lucky enough to have a guy there with two dogs and he was super nice about Koa’s unusual social habit of making an unfriendly-sounding rawr everytime a dog came nearby.  Eventually, he was able to run with the others and everyone had a good time.

rose paradeThe rest of the day was spent lounging around the house, eating breakfast and pie, and napping.  Kumquat also got to watch part of the Rose Parade with me.  Aaaah…that was so much better than going to work.

The Drive Home

magical houseOn Saturday, we got up late, packed our things, had lunch with my parents, and then headed back up to SF. drive home Jason and Jia also followed us in their car and Koa rode back with us too.

Along the Grapevine, we also encountered some snow flurries, which was pretty cool.

drive home  There wasn’t much traffic and we made pretty good time.  For dinner we stopped at The Apricot Tree Restaurant where they have a huge collection of old lunchboxes and thermos’ on display.

The meal also wouldn’t be complete without a taste of their fresh apricot pie, which was good but I still don’t think I like apricots.

We also took CA-152 across this time and stopped at the Gilroy Outlet Shopping Center.  I picked up a new pair of Nikes and almost bought this adorable sweater for Kumquat.

We all made it home in one piece and the drive back up was much more bearable than the drive down last Saturday.

Marie and the Boys

Suminos For lunch, we met up with cousin Marie and the boys.  The boys are so big now and I can’t help reflect on how Cole (the oldest) used to be Kumquat’s age when I used to babysit him.

They were also reunited with Koa who was gracious enough to pose for a photo.

Also, thanks to Kenji for helping us out with our tire.  You’re the best!

Oysters Three Ways

On Saturday, we drove to Tomales Bay Oyster Co. in the morning and arrived by 11:00 am.  Apparently that’s a good time to get there if you want to have a good selection of picnic tables.  It was a beautiful day in the Bay Area and perfect for shuckin’ and suckin’.

The drive over wasn’t too bad.  Koa came along and sat in the backseat with Kumquat.  They both got a good nap in the car on the ride over.

James and Sylvia were already there and set-up the BBQ and a stove with a huge pot of water.  They bought a bunch of clams and threw them in the pot with garlic, butter, and veggies for a tasty soup.

Jes bought a bag of Kumamotos and we ate them raw with the “Hog Wash” that I prepared that morning.

On the BBQ, were some grilled/baked oysters that were finished off with creme fraiche and cheese.  I thought it would be gross but Oysters Rockefeller is tasty after all and it didn’t even have bacon on it this time around!

Once the soup was all done, they emptied out the huge pot and replaced it with a much smaller pot filled with oil for some fried oysters!  Boy, that was tasty too!

Before now, I had only eaten mainly raw oysters and was a little hesitant about any other preparation.  Now I think I’m more willing to try baked and fried ones now too!

Kumquat hung out with Koa for most of the day and they each had a chance to play on the beach.

She seemed to enjoy being outdoors and was pretty excited to see the water.

Koa had a pretty good time too.

What a fun day!  Can’t wait to go back again!!

Happy Giants Halloween!

It’s Halloween AND Giants Day today!  Wow.  That’s a lot of stuff going on in the city. Mirian even took Kumquat to the parade that went along Market Street this morning in hopes of catching a glimpse of the World Series Champions.

I wore my tiger costume to work today but we didn’t do anything special once I was home.  As usual, there was no trick-or-treating in our building so we still have a huge bag of candy here for us to enjoy.  Heh Heh.  Kumquat didn’t wear her elephant costume today but she gets to wear it tomorrow for a special storytime at the library.

It was a quiet Halloween night for us…just Kumquat and her two pumpkins…next year we’ll take her outside.  Promise.
