Table for 15 1/2

This morning we met up with everyone for a little Dim Sum before heading out for our return flight to SF.  Brother and Joy joined us and we ended up squishing 15 people plus a small child at a table that is really meant for 10.  We even tucked Elise away in the back corner as she slept in her carrier.

It was such a great way to end the weekend and I was impressed with the turn out of this morning’s brunch date.  It was like one gigantic family gathering with three sets of siblings, 2 children, and a bunch of old friends of at least 19 years.

By noon, we headed out to the airport.  Thanks for the ride, Brother!!  Once we arrived at the gate, I got a random call from Vyl.

Vyl: Hey, are you at LAX?

Me: Yeah, how’d you know that?!

Vyl: Uh, so am I – at Gate 7.

Me: Hey! So are we!

I guess she was sitting around waiting for our flight and noticed two people that looked like us from afar.  So, we had the pleasure of flying back to SF with Vyl who happened to be down in LA for a wedding as well.  It’s funny that we’d seen each other just the week before and didn’t realize that we’d both be in the same place.  Go figure.  To make matters a little more interesting, she glanced at our boarding passes and saw that our places in line were B18 and B19.  Hers was B17.  Pretty trippy.

We got home by 3:30, which gave us a good Sunday afternoon to rest.  We had pre-paid the Dog Walker to come 4 times so I treated myself to an evening of staying in and letting Koa go out with Adrienne as I lounged on the couch.  I felt so spoiled and it was awesome.

Disappointment and Surprise

On Saturday morning, Jes and I took Koa to Chrissy Field for a Shiba Meet-up.  We were supposed to meet a bunch of other Shiba owners and their dogs for a day of romping on the beach but we got there a little late and totally missed them.  We walked and walked and couldn’t find them.  So, Koa ended up with a really long walk and about 20 minutes of running off-leash on the grassy field and beach.  The morning didn’t go quite as planned.  Too bad, Dog.

On Saturday evening, Jes and I went out for a nice dinner at Luce.  It’s a relatively new restaurant that we found on Open Table and thought we’d give it a try.  Have completely no expectations, we were pleasantly surprised with the awesome 5-course tasting dinner that we had.  Apparently when you order the 5-course menu, you end up with 11 actual items to try.  We had an amuse-bouche, all 5 courses, and a sprinkling of intermezzos, palate cleansers, and even a pre-dessert.  What the heck?!  It ended up being a 3-hour dinner and we left satisfied and buzzed.

One of my favorites was the foie gras on top of toasted brioche drizzled with a duck consumme.  Yum.

Another was the pre-dessert consisting of melon granita, ricotta cream (tasted like coconut milk), and basil oil.  Sounds gross but it was sooooo tasty.  I seriously felt like I was a judge on Top Chef with surprise after surprise.  One of the funniest parts of dinner was the fact that we were puzzled by about 3/4 of the menu items.  That’s when Google came in handy.  On my crackberry, I looked up things like “escabeche”, “purslane”, “branzini”, and “pintade”.  We were so ghetto but it was very educational.

Morning Walk

This morning as I was putting on my shoes to take Koa for his am walk, I got a call from Michelle who was out with Jack. So, we met up at the ballpark and took a very pleasant walk down Embarcadero with Koa on a leash and Jack in his stroller. It was a beautiful Saturday morning in SF and we all got a nice long walk. I brought my new camera with me and got a couple of shots in.

Jack got a kick out of watching Koa doing his “business” and I got a cute shot of his two new bottom teeth.

Another Good Day

I took the dog to the park today and there was an unusually large number of people and dogs there.  I thought he was totally going to fall apart but he managed to hang out off-leash with all his buddies for almost 40 minutes without any outbursts.  He had one little growly thing with a pup but it was nothing.  I got a video of him this afternoon and it’s posted on MakaKoa today.  Nice work, Dog!

Breakthrough?!

dsc_4074.jpg

Recently, I have been struggling to retrain Koa to be less “dominant” out on our walks. He’s typically a very easy-going pup but when he’s on a leash he can be a little barky. He pulls on the leash, barks uncontrollably, and can look rather ferocious to the unsuspecting dog owner. Two weeks ago, I took him to the neighborhood park and let him run free with his leash still attached. He was doing great until he decided to start barking and showing his teeth to this little gray dog. His owner grabbed Koa by the leash and yelled at him. Then for the next 30 minutes I got a lecture from this supposed expert about how I have to do this and that to correct this terrible behavior. *sigh* What a downer.

So, I’ve been going back to the same park across the street where I’ve met a group of dog owners who hang out there every evening. Luckily the mean dog guy hasn’t been there all week and apparently he has lectured each and every owner that goes there for one thing or another. I guess I’m not the only one.

For the past week, Koa has met a new dog each day and it’s hit or miss whether he’s going to bark at him/her or just sniff and move on. They all play off leash and I’m a hesistant to let him go so we’ve been walking around on leash or standing at the perimeter just watching. After a while, I got to get to know the owners and I’ve been staying out longer than usual in order for Koa to get more comfortable with all the dogs and owners. They all know his name now and bring him treats.

I also bought a new collar for him to help correct his behaviors. It’s a German-made “pinch collar” that looks like metal spikes around his neck. He’s so muscular around the neck that the average choke collar wasn’t doing anything but hurting my hand when I pulled. So, I bit the bullet and got the evil-looking collar and it’s starting to work. I only have a yank quickly and he usually stops whatever he’s doing and gives me a look like he’s saying “alright!!” I’ve also stopped leaving food out all day and only feed him in the evening when I can be the “alpha dog” and control his feedings.

He was doing rather well until yesterday when he was barking at everything that moved. I was so embarrassed. I felt like the mom at daycare that has the kid with a hitting problem. In fact, his barking was so out of control that when he finally calmed down, there were only two dogs left at the park. How sad. How pathetic.

Well, this evening, I went back to the park and told myself that he’s not going to get better unless I keep trying. We slowly made out way around the park to where most of the dogs were hanging out. We stood at the edge and I let each and every one of them come around to sniff Koa. He just stood there and even whimpered a little as if he wanted to go play. So I walked him to the center of the grassy area and let go of the leash. He zoomed around and chased the other dogs and looked as happy as can be. He even went around to each owner to greet them and got some treats. I couldn’t have been more pleased. The wanker was behaving and playing well with others. One owner actually came up to me and said, “We don’t think Koa’s aggressive. He’s just barky. He’s doing great today.”

As we walked home, the group of owners all put their dogs on their leashes and started to follow us home. They were actually on their way to the corner bar to grab some drinks and invited us to come along. I said I’d take a rain check but in the meantime we were quite a sight to see…6 people with 6 dogs on leashes and Koa was one of them. He wasn’t barking or pulling or causing any trouble. Did we have a breakthrough?! Or will my wanker be back tomorrow for some more trouble? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Poor Ducky

I woke up on Wednesday morning to find the aftermath of a massacre that apparently occurred the night before. Poor Ducky Tennis Ball got to’ up! Squeakers are crackalicious for Koa and this ducky didn’t have a fighting chance.

Oh wells…here’s my attempt at getting an “after” photo. Poor Ducky…
