No Brakes

imgp0470.jpgOn Tuesday after work, I threw Koa in the car, picked up Jes from work, and we drove to Chrissy Field located just next to the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s a long stretch of grass, sand, and water, which makes for a very picturesque run or windsurf. In fact, it’s so windy there that there was a bunch of people in the water windsurfing and body boarding in full wetsuit attire. Crazy fools.

Anyway, Koa seemed to really enjoy romping on the sand. We actually let him loose from the leash and he darted from one end to the other taking in the wind, sand, and smells. There were plenty of dogs out there – mostly labs who were playing in the water.

We found a strip of land that was surrounded 3/4 of the way around by water. This was the perfect place to take Koa since it would make it much easier to keep him in one place without the fear of him going too far. If you know Koa, you know that he HATES water so it was safe to say he wouldn’t try to make a run for it through the water.

At one point, we were playing a game of chase and as he was running away from me, he got too close to the shore and didn’t realize he was coming up to the water so quickly. Before he could apply the brakes, he fell into this huge drop in the shoreline (underwater), which inevitably gave him a quick dunk in the water. In just a matter of seconds he had disappeared “plunk!” into the water. The look on his face as he came up for air paddling with all his might back to shore was a sight to see. He looked shocked, confused, and frightened all at the same time. I was laughing so hard that I forgot to take a photo of his head bobbing in the water. I think he was pretty much done for the evening once he made it to shore. Not only was he dirty from the sand but now wet and salty. I guess it’s time to send him out for a bath!!

Virtual BBQ

I spent my July 4th with Marie, Cole, and Kenji. The day started at Marie’s house where we had an udon lunch together at Cole’s kiddie table. Afterwards, I played with his new toys – a bunch of different characters from the movie “Cars”. I also brought my laptop and did some work while I was there. In the meantime, I introduced Cole to the internet. We played some online Elmo games and messed around with the Photo Booth program on my macbook. He certainly got a kick out of seeing himself on the screen.

Meanwhile, Jes was preparing some ribs for the BBQ that they were having at Jimmy’s house. So, we turned on iChat and Cole got to wave to Jesse. Eventually Cole got pretty grumpy and we decided to put him down for a nap. Unfortunately he was so excited by the internet games and everything else that was going on that he wasn’t really cooperating. Before he could start climbing on the furniture again, Jes got back online, looked him straight in the eye, and said “Hey, aren’t you supposed to go neh neh?!” Cole was so scared of him that he walked himself over to the futon with a really guilty look on his face and asked Marie for a pillow. He kept looking over to my laptop to check if Jes was watching. Since Jes was still watching him, it was only a matter of minutes before he fell asleep. It worked like a charm! Marie was so shocked since it usually takes at least 30 minutes or lots of coaxing to get him to fall asleep.

Once people arrived at Jimmy’s house, they came by to say “hello” to me. It was pretty neat being about to talk to see and talk to them. In fact, Jes put the laptop (me) at the dinner table with everyone. It was as if I was seated at the table with them. I could see who was there, what they ate, and could hear what they were saying. All I was missing was a taste of the ribs and a beer in my hand. Virtual BBQ!

The evening ended with dinner at On the Border, a walk around the shopping village for a balloon sword for Cole, and then a nice long walk down to the local park. We sat on the grass and watched the fireworks. We also witnessed a huge car crash involving at least 6 cars and a turned-over truck. Crazy.

Here are photos from the day’s events. Enjoy!

Violated

img_5822.jpgThis past week, Koa was walking a little funny so we decided to take him to the vet on Sunday afternoon. Poor doggie…as soon as we stepped into the vet’s office he started to shake and looked so nervous. How did he know he was going to see the vet?!

Our vet was pretty friendly and tried his best to calm him down. After a couple questions, the vet proceeded with his exam. Unfortunately, that involved Koa getting felt up, squirted in the nose with a Bordatella vaccination, and then taken to the back for a quick poking in his butt. As Jes held him down during his exam, he gave me the saddest look as if he was saying “help me out a little over here?” When the vet brought him back, he told us that dogs sometimes need to have their anal glands “expressed” and the vet said it was pretty stinky. I guess that’s what was bothering him all week. Poor dog…hopefully he won’t need to get violated for another couple years.

Did you just cut that wire?

img_5815.jpgOur garage door is really temperamental. When the sun is out at a certain angle, it’s impossible to close the garage door without having to physically pull it down. Jesse usually has to unlock the chain, pull down the door by hand, push the remote again, and then wait for the track to close the door all the way down. I think it has to do with the way the sunlight hits or reflects onto the sensor. Anyway, it’s been doing this for a few years now and it’s quite a pain when you’re trying to leave the house between 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

So, today after we washed the car, I found Jesse hunched over the sensor with wire cutters. He cut the wire and attempted to switch the sensors around. I stood there watching and scratching my head and I was so ready for the garage door to be completely toasted for good. After a mere 10 minutes of tinkering with wires and connectors, the moment of truth arrived. I pushed the button and the garage door went down!!! Woo Hoo!! You should have seen the pride oozing out of Jesse’s eyes and ears and a grin that went from ear to ear. I think he was more impressed with himself than I was. Good job, handy man!

I love my Admin.

About a year ago, I filed a complaint to my Network Admin. I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t fire him after all. Just hours ago, I thought my photos from last night’s party were doomed. Fortunately, I was so distraught that I told my admin as soon as he woke up expecting him to say, “good job, ya dummy”. Instead there was a pleasant turn of events. As I was rolling around on the bed in mid-tantrum saying “They’re gone! They’re gone!”, he calmly said, “Give me your SD Card and reader.” I said, “No way, I deleted them for good! You can’t get them back.” I even sarcastically said, “I’ll give you a dollar if you get them back.” So, I went and got them and with a quick Google search and a couple clicks of his laptop keyboard, my photos were on their way to recovery! Holy crap! This guy’s a genius! And so a year later, my Admin has restored my faith and my photos.

Dear Admin,

You are the bestest admin in the whole wide world! For now, at least.

Love, beakatude

And here are the few photos I took last night.  It was Howard’s Graduation Party but he was so busy chatting-it-up with his 70 guests that I didn’t actually get a photo of him.  I know, I suck.  I’ll just have to wait for the photos that Patti took.

Dog is smart.

In the last two weeks, we’ve had a couple thefts…

THEFT #1:  Last week, we ordered Domino’s Pizza.  It was half pepperoni and mushroom (my half) and half sausage and jalepenos (Jes’ half).  I ate two slices and Jes ate three.  The next morning, I went downstairs to pack a slice for lunch and discovered only one slice of sausage and jalepeno left.  I thought, “D00d, fatty…didn’t even leave me a slice of the pepperoni and mushroom!”  In the afternoon, I came home from work and confronted Jes about his late-night snacking.  Apparently, he had gone downstairs that night for a late-night snack and found the box of cinnamon breadsticks upside-down on the floor and one slice of sausage and jalepeno in the pizza box.  We compared stories with the usual “I didn’t eat it, I thought you did” and realized that neither of us ate the remaining two pepperoni slices.  IT WAS THE DOG!!  He managed to climb up onto the dining table, eat the two slices, leave the one remaining slice in the box, and close the box!  We were duped.  It was obviously too late to punish the sneaky dog and all we could do was shake our fists at him and say, “sneaky dog!!”

THEFT #2:  This evening, Jes prepared the two remaining steaks from our BBQ on Saturday.  We ate only the equivalent of one steak with parts of the remaining steak (fat and scraps) in Koa’s bowl and the other part on the foil, on the plate, on the kitchen island.  Two hours after dinner, I went downstairs for a drink and discovered the foil on the floor completely cleaned off.  There was no steak in sight.  All I found was the foil and a dog under the dining table licking his lips.  HE ATE THE STEAK!  The steak was way too high for him to reach and if he could, we’d expect him to knock the plate down with the steak and foil.  But no, he’s too sneaky for that and now we’re standing around scratching our heads and shaking our fists at the dog once more.

*sigh*  Dog is smart.
