On Sunday evening, I babysat Jack while his parents went to a wedding. He was a little fussy but it was fine. In fact, within 4 hours, he managed to take 2 1/2 naps, pooped twice, and finished a bottle of Mommy Juice. Koa also helped out with his super hearing. Jack slept in the bedroom and as soon as he started to wimper or cry, Koa would run to the door to check out the scene. Good work, Sidekick!

Crap x10

Jes is away for a couple days so it’s just me and the dawg this weekend. I just finished the longest week EVER so when I came home, I threw some laundry in the machine, put on my PJs, and turned on some bad TV. Friday nights are my favorite part of the week because I get to just relax, waste time, stay up late, and get stuff done (if I want to). AND I still have two more days left!!

10 crappy things that happened to me this week:

  1. I had to work on NYE
  2. I had to work on New Year’s Day.
  3. It was too cold and far away to watch the NYE fireworks.
  4. The BART ticket vendors gave me a hard time for no reason.
  5. I had to walk the dog in Hurricane winds and rain.
  6. My BART train was delayed both ways in one day totaling a 3-hour commute.
  7. Coffee spilled INSIDE my backpack and all over my jacket. Don’t ask how that happened.
  8. Dropped my brand new Crackberry on the sidewalk and now it has a gigantic scuff on the front.
  9. I had 3 kids throw up on me in one day.
  10. They ran out of oatmeal at the cafeteria this morning so I had to starve until lunch.

Thank goodness for weekends.

Ice Cream Sammiches

p1010115.jpg

At work, we celebrate everyone’s birthdays by drawing names out of a hat. It was my turn to prepare birthday dessert for the birthday person last week so I decided to make ice cream sandwiches. The birthday girl loves mint chip ice cream so this was perfect. On Thursday night, I baked 24 round chocolate cookies and packed them up in a shoebox. Of course I had to have a sample and the cookie came out nice and chewy but strong enough to hold the ice cream.

On Friday, I set up a cookie/ice cream bar for all to enjoy. Unfortunately, by the time I served them, the cookies were a little on the hard side. Everyone seemed to still enjoy the special treat but they could have just been very convincing. Regardless, I think the birthday girl enjoyed her treat. I have an idea for how to tweak the recipe a bit so I’ll be making another batch soon. Once I get it right, I’ll make sure to share the recipe.

Happy New Year!!

Happy Be-lated Christmas!

dsc_0272a.jpg

I just realized that I didn’t have a post on Christmas. So, Merry Christmas, Everyone! Thanks for all the Christmas cards!! I think we got a record number this year!

On Christmas Eve, we took Jia to South Coast Plaza for breakfast and a little shopping. She arrived the night before and it was nice to have everyone together again. The rest of the day was spent hanging out, playing video games, shopping for groceries, and making cookies.

On Christmas morning, I woke up early to go hang out with my parents. They were on their way to their hangout, McDonald’s, so I tagged along. It was fun just sitting there with my coffee (like everyone else) and watching their friends come and go. They’re like a bunch of teenagers again hanging out there every morning until lunchtime. My dad says that retirement life is awesome. I mean, he didn’t actually use the word “awesome” but that’s the gist of it. I want to retire.

Later that morning, the Laos piled into the Mountaineer to go visit Grandma in the nursing home. She’s been there for a couple years now ever since she fell and has been semi-comatose. Surprisingly, she was much more responsive that morning and being the therapist, I checked the tone and range in her arms and hands. I couldn’t help it. I wanted to make sure she was comfortable and positioned correctly. It was so sweet to see Jes’ dad with his mom (our grandma). We all want her to get up so badly but she’s 90-something and had a pretty bad injury to her head.

On Christmas afternoon, the roast was placed in the oven and we all played the “watch the temp rise” game” in hopes that it will be done in time. Everyone just hung out at home and some took naps, making for a pretty relaxed afternoon. That was until people started arriving and it was about one hour before dinner was served. That’s when all the action happens: take out the roast and finish everything else. It always seems to be that way. Watching Jes in the kitchen with so many people hovering and helping him reminded me of Iron Chef…such controlled chaos. Dinner was at Jes’ parents’ house in BP this year with both families gathered for the meal. We had a giant standing rib roast, corn, Yorkshire pudding, smashed potatoes, a Harry & David ham that someone left for his parents on the front porch, and lots of pie. We were all stuffed by the end of the night but still had some energy left for Wii and some family portraits.

Christmas vacation was fun but way too short. On our last night, we slept at my parents’ house in C-Town and it was so cozy since they turn the heater on at night. The next morning, I woke up pretty early to hang out with my Dad and then we started the drive back up to SF by 11 am.

Here are photos from the long weekend.

This sucks.

With Christmas behind us it’s back to the grind for me.  We got home around 6:00 last night, walked across the street for dinner, and both passed out by 9:30.  I woke up early this morning to go to work and it sucks being here instead of home with my family.  Fortunately for me, I got a lot of cancellations so I get to hangout and surf a little bit before cranking out 5 more reports.  Oh how I miss my two-week breaks but I’ve gotta make money somehow.  C’est la vie!

I’m still working on the photos from my Christmas vacation so stay tuned for those.
